Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

You're asking for trouble by using registry cleaner/booster/optimizer/tuneup type programs.

They do little to nothing to improve speed or performance.

What they can do is break programs and damage the operating system.

Adobe Reader 8.1.3 is outdated and needs to be updated to 9.3.4 or replaced with Foxit Reader 4.1.1.0805 - which is a smaller and faster program for viewing and reading PDF documents.

Advanced Registry Optimizer and Registry Mechanic 9.0 definitely need to be uninstalled. Registry cleaner/optimizer/booster/tuneup type programs do nothing to improve or performance. What they can do is break programs and damage the operating system.

Java(TM) 6 Update 12 is outdated and needs to be updated to Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.21(6 Update 21). This is the most current version and is the only java version needed.

OpenOffice.org 2.0 is outdated and needs to be updated to 3.2.1. If you no longer use it, uninstall it instead.

Skype 4.1 is outdated and needs to be updated to 4.2.0.169. If you no longer use it, uninstall it instead.

These programs are unneeded and can be uninstalled:

Apple Software Update

Driver Detective

Google Update Helper

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3

Java DB 10.4.1.3

Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 12

Logitech Desktop Messenger

Fantastic! Huge improvement with the changes you've recommended! Still starting up super slow, and I have to shut down some processes in the task manager but it is a least stable enough to work on now... thank you, thank you for your help and expertise!

Did you have any thoughts on Uniblue products?

Don't be too quick to close this thread because we're not done yet.

Close all open windows first, then start HiJackThis and click "Do a system scan and save a log file", then save that new log and submit it here.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Uniblue Registry Booster and pretty much anything "Uniblue" are other programs to stay away from.

You need to go into startup and uncheck:
%systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k, McAfee Security Scan Plus.lnk = ?,
QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime, Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe",and Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE...that's in "Run,msconfig,ok,startup" then click apply and ok and reboot.
I would also uninstall Google Toolbar, Yahoo Toolbar in Add/Remove Programs as well as MacAfee Security Scan. Why though doesn't Avg show in startup as what I assume is your Antivirus program? I would check in Program Setings that it is set to run with Windows and download and install the 9.0 version as you show 8.0 which is long dead version.

What are you suddenly doing with McAfee? You should definitely get rid it.

meg:

Are you using the free version or paid version of AVG8?

---------------------------------------------------------------

Definitely get rid of McAfee.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Except for this startup entry:

Broadcom Wireless Manager UI or WLTRAY.exe

all the others can be unchecked.

All "AVG" entries in the list should be checked.

You guys are all so aweseome! My computer is starting to run better than ever! Thank you, thank you!

I downloaded Adobe flshplayer over the weekend and it apparently came with a Macafee download, ugh! I am running the free version of AVG and thus far I've had no viruses. I may have inadvertently shutdown AVG through the taskmanager as I am constantly having to close down processes through taskmanager when I reboot to free up resources, else it takes forever to navigate or open anything. I've made the changes to startup as suggested and am going to reboot again... and will post another log, I'm always nervous when I reboot cuz it seems to take me forever to get my computer stable again.... here goes, thx! Meg

meg:

There's no reason for you to have to constantly close running processes in Windows Task Manager if the startup load in the startup list and services list are edited to prevent unnecessary programs from auto-loading and running in the background.

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you're using the free version of AVG8, you definitely need to upgrade it to AVG9. Decline and opt out to install the AVG toolbar and Yahoo crap.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know where you download Adobe Flash Player from, but I haven't seen it with any McAfee security scan crap.

No matter what program you install or update, you need to take the time to read each window that appears during the install process. If you blindly accept the default options, you'll find yourself installing toolbars and add-ons and other crap that you don't need.

Uninstall that MacAfee Security from Add/Remove programs and just don't accept toolbars or programs when installing other programs unless they are needed.

I was able to reboot and run HijackThis to get a logfile withouth having to close down anything in task manager, normally I can't run anything without shutting down programs in task manager... and I was able to get to this page through IE, which is a big improvement... that all said, it tool forever to boot up still and it took a long time to launch IE... ??? Oh, and where would I find the Progam settings that are set to run with Windows so that I can download and istall ver. 9.0, not sure which program I am updating? Thanks!

Here are the results of my scan, without shutting anything down and with the changes to the start up that you've recommended. Oddly enough, I can't locate the Yahoo toolbar in my add/remove programs to delete it?

Thanks! Meg :-)
