xp won't boot after adding memory
I have an Asus P4B Pentium4 running XP Pro with 2 - 256mb memory sticks. When I tried to add a 512mb SDRam PC133 in its 3rd memory slot it won't boot, all I get is a DOS screen saying changes have been made and offering me options of Safe, Safe with Cmd prompt or Previous setting startup, but none of these work......but when I take the 512 out it boots and XP runs fine?
Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Hi,

That type and size of RAM module should be OK in that board. Let's get a report on what is installed

Download > http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.ph...57fb57cf6eb944

Small utility program called AIDA32 which will show you a lot about your computer.

It's not an installer version, just runs from what ever folder you Extract the files TO, after double clicking the saved downloaded file on for example, your Desktop screen.

Inside that folder, which will be by default named AIDA32, you should see a file AIDA32.exe that when double clicked starts the utility, and it just takes less than half a minute to pop up a nice list of hard ware and soft ware.....

Look under the Mother board category for memory info

It's possible to click on each module for a detailed report about waht the chip is. (SPD is that sub-category)

Post the info about the RAM that is installed....... size of module in MB's, speed in mhz

If they are not PC 133 then you need to match what they are.

Could be that the 512 one is bad.

Here the specs for 512 MB modules for that motherboard:

Module Size: 512MB
Package: 168-pin DIMM
Feature: SDRAM, PC133
Specs: SDRAM, PC133 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 133MHz • 3.3V • 64Meg x 64 •

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Did you remove the 2 - 256 MB modules and try to boot with the 512 MB module alone?

Installing matching modules is the best way to do it because it avoids any incompatibility problem between mismatched modules.
