Assuming she is running some version of Windows ...

- Empty the Windows wastebasket

- If using Outlook Express for e-mail, empty the "Deleted" folder and compress all folders

- Uninstall any programs that are no longer being used and are not expected to be used.

- If the computer has a CD or DVD burner, burn needed but not often used documents, photos, music files, etc. to discs. Then confirm that all the files have been successfully burned and can be opened BEFORE deleting them from the hard drive.

- Get an external USB drive and move files but not installed programs to the external drive.

- Look into the possibility of replacing the existing drive with a larger capacity one.

A good (free) "cleaner" for removing junk from your system is CCleaner. It also performs a "clean-up" pass on the registry.

http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
(Click on Download from FileHippo......, in the PayPal box)

When the next window opens, click "Download Latest Version" on the right of the page.

Alternate Download;
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

Once you download and install it, open the program then click on (left hand side) OPTIONS, then COOKIES. Any cookies you want to save (trusted sites, places you have usernames/passwords), highlight them in the left column, then (using the directional arrows between the panes), move them to the right hand column under "Cookies to keep".

Still under Options, click on Advanced. Remove the check mark from the box for "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours".

Leave all other settings at the default.

Then click on Cleaner (on the top left). When that window opens, click on Run Cleaner (bottom right of the window.)

When it finishes, close CCleaner, and restart your machine. (Some files will not be deleted until a restart is performed.)

I do not advocate running CCleaner on each boot. I run it once or twice a week.

RegSeeker
Open it, click on Clean The Registry, then OK.

Once it's finished, along the bottom of the screen, (near the operation progress bar) click on Select, choose "Select All". Then click on Action, then "Delete selected items".

All deleted items will be backed up, just click OK for the default backup filenames/locations.

Close the program and restart the machine.

NOTE: This is a powerful tool. It has many other settings/tools/tweaks. Use more than what is mentioned above at your own volition/risk.

Go with www.ccleaner.com like Dan said, but if it won't install try cleaning off some temp files.

Try this:

1.

Click on Start and then Run.
2.

In the text box in the Run window, type %Temp% and click OK. A folder full of files and other folders will appear.

All of the folders and files you see in this Temp folder are no longer being used by Windows XP and can safely be deleted.
3.

To remove individual folders or files, hold down your Ctrl key while left-clicking on each item you want delete. Release the Ctrl key when you're finished.

To delete these items, hit your Delete key or choose File and then Delete from the menu.
4.

Confirm that you want to delete the files by clicking Yes on the Confirm Multiple File Delete window that opens.
5.

If you'd instead like to remove everything inside the Temp folder, choose Edit and then Select All from the menu.

Note: If you're prompted that there are hidden files in this folder, just click on OK to bypass the message. A few hidden files hanging out in the Temp folder probably aren't important enough to worry about.
6.

Now that all of the files and folders are selected, hit your Delete key or choose File and then Delete from the menu.
7.

Confirm that you want to delete the files by clicking Yes on the Confirm Multiple File Delete window that opens.
8.

After all of the files have been deleted you can close the window and empty your Recycle Bin, permanently removing the files from your PC.

Do NOT use any registry Cleaners .. or the registry cleaning option of CCleaner ..
They're not needed and can do more harm than good.

I (and many people) have been using CCleaner and RegSeeker for over four or five years, on many machines, and I haven't come across one problem with either of these programs.

I second that. Registry cleaner/booster/optimizer/tuneup type programs will do nothing to improve speed or performance. What they can do is break programs and damage the operating system.

RegSeeker hasn't been updated in several years. I used it a long time ago and found it notorious for breaking Microsoft-named programs.

Jeanie:

Do the following in the order listed with your friend's Gateway laptop.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it. Allow it to install in its default location.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear. Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Then count yourself lucky, my friend.

I, personally, have had to repair at least 3 dozen rigs that CCleaner alone has cratered (only the registry part of CCleaner; the regular cleaner is okey doke), and god alone knows how many rigs from other, so-called 'optimization' apps.

The startup load needs trimming down. Some of them don't need to auto-load and run at all, and others can be manually started when needed.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

Remove the checkmark in these startup entries. Be aware that .exe may be missing from the names.

RemoteControl or PDVDServ.exe
(Leave it checked only if a remote control is actually being used with the computer)

Reminder or Remind_XP.exe

IgfxTray or igfxtray.exe

HotKeysCmds or hkcmd.exe

gcasServ or gcasServ.exe

x3watch or x3watch.exe

KernelFaultCheck or dumprep 0 -k

BrStsWnd or BrstsWnd.exe

QuickTime Task or qttask.exe

swg or GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe

Install Pending Files or SIFXINST.EXE

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart. You don't want to restart the computer just yet.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on these service entries to open their properties window.

Google Update Service

Google Software Updater

InstallDriver Table Manager

Symantec Core LC

If "Startup Type" is set on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

If "Startup Type" is already set on Manual, close the properties window and do nothing.

After you're done, close the services window and then restart the computer.

When the small System Configuration Utility window appears during restart, ignore the message.

Put a checkmark in that window, then click OK to close it.

--------------------------------------------------

Go into Add Or Remove Programs, then uninstall these programs.

Apple Software Update

Google Update Helper

Google Updater

Microsoft AntiSpyware

--------------------------------------------------

Download and save these programs. Don't install or run them or do anything with them yet.

SUPERAntiSpyware 4.46.0.1000 (The free version)

Norton Removal Tool 2011.0.1.9

--------------------------------------------------

Is a Maxtor external hard drive still being used?

Is Skype still being used?

Are Brother and Epson and Sony peripherals still being used?
