Question Solved: PC slow to boot
My PC takes forever to boot abda check of the task manager shows all kinds of junk that comes on. If I recall correctly, at one time there was a post here with a URl to a site that listed waht should be left on and what I could disable. Does anyone recall that site?

Let's see what's auto-loading and running in the background in the startup list and in the services list, and if any other obvious problems are present.

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

Your computer is slow to boot because you have so many programs autoloading at Windows Startup.

Click Start > Run > type msconfig

Select the Startup tab.

Uncheck the following items:

===================================================================

I would get rid of Windows Defender. It's crap and really doesn't behave well with AVG. You can replace it with the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

===================================================================

I would also get rid of Windows Search from "Add or remove programs". It's a useless system resource hog pushed by Windows Update.

===================================================================

Reboot the computer.

After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

EDIT: That is not the version of HijackThis flavallee asked you to install. You have a really outdated version. Please remove it and install version 2.0.4. Then, please post a new log.

Sorry. Didn't realize it was that old. I try to keep software updated but guess I missed that one! One other thing. I went to Add Remove Programs and didn't see Windows Search to remove it. Is there something else I have to do to find it?

Here's the log from the new HjackThis:

You used HiJackThis 1.99.1(a very old version) with your first scan and HijackThis 2.0.4(the current version) with your second scan.

Uninstall version 1.99.1 so you don't mistakenly use it again.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK.

Expand the window so you can see the list clearly.

Double-click on these entries one at a time to open their properties window:

Ati HotKey Poller

ATI Smart

DSBrokerService

Google Update Service (gupdate) (gupdate)

Google Software Updater (gusvc)

InstallDriver Table Manager (IDriverT)

Java Quick Starter (JavaQuickStarterService)

Pml Driver HPZ12

PnkBstrA

PnkBstrB

SupportSoft Sprocket Service (dellsupportcenter) (sprtsvc_dellsupportcenter)

If "Startup Type" is set on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

If "Startup Type" is already set on Manual, close the properties window for that entry.

After you're done, close the window.

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab).

Remove the checkmark in these entries:

SoundMAXPnP or smax4pnp

StartCCC or CLIStart

iTunesHelper

swg or GoogleToolbarNotifier

Event Planner Reminder 2009

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Restart.

When the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore its message.

Put a checkmark in that window, then click OK.

Start HijackThis, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the new log, then submit it here.

Windows Search obviously isn't showing in your "Add or remove programs".

Click Start > Run > type CMD

In the command prompt window, type (or paste):

C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB940157$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

Press Enter.

Reboot the computer.

Now look at your running processes for the following processes:

SearchIndexer.exe

SearchProtocolHost.exe

If they're gone, you've been successful.

If not,

Click Start > Run > type services.msc

Locate the Windows Search service (if present). Stop and Disable it.

If Windows Search is not in the services,

Locate the Indexing service. Stop and Disable it

Then, please post a new HijackThis log.

I'm doing something wrong and don't know what it is.
I click start go to run and type in CMD. I get a prompt C:\Documents and settings\OWNER>
When I try typing in the command prompt you gave me it says it dosen't work. I can't/don't know how, to get rid of that Documents and Settings prompt to type in this command.

I thought I may have been typing in something wrong, so I cut and paste from your message. I get this when I enter the command:

The system cannot find the path specified.

Then, try the other steps:

Quote:
Click Start > Run > type services.msc

Locate the Windows Search service (if present). Stop and Disable it.

If Windows Search is not in the services,

Locate the Indexing service. Stop and Disable it

Then, please post a new HijackThis log.
