If you are comfortable with working within the registry, you could search in there for Grisoft and AVG and manually remove references after un-installing again. But be careful!

Since you are able to run a scan from the tests menu, it doesn't sound like a virus has disabled it. (Not sure if AVG is affected by this anyway).
