In spite of having auto updates checked there was an update ready to be installed.
Apart from a power cut halfway during installation all seems well.

Hi Dak, overnight I did a system restore and the thunderbird icon is back on the taskbar. However, clicking the icon now produces this message "Coudn't load XPCOM"

I have learnt the difference between "save" and "backup" and must live with my mistake.
