If it's blown, you'll need to buy a new unit.

You're right in that it shouldn't lock-up, maybe just slow down.
The more applications you run the greater the chance of some kind of conflict...
Discolouration on the bottom of the processor?
Sounds like they may have fried their CPU also.
Athlon XPs are about the easiest processors to kill...

Generally, the least alterations you make to the BIOS settings the better.
Could be any one of those things, or more.
Certainly, trying a new IDE cable would be a good first step. ;)

Try running one or both of these RAM tests to eliminate memory as an issue:...
One for the X-files perhaps?
As pfiltz asks: any lights, beeps, fan activity?
Have you checked the obvious stuff like the power outlet / PSU cable / fuses etc?
