Solved Performance showstopper only in Visual Studio

Arg, facepalm. It's that old serial offender, again: ESET. My personal firewall was interfering with everything to do with Visual Studio. Not sure why this suddenly started happening; probably at some point an "Allow this traffic?" message box popped up and grabbed focus from me while I...

Solved Performance showstopper only in Visual Studio

Hi all, My installation of Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 has, for the past few months, been a little crotchety, frequently freezing up for minutes at a time. But on the whole, it's been semi-tolerable. All other applications on the computer have been fine. Then yesterday, things became...

    Solved Russian ad malware (Toshiba)

NM, found the problem. I looked through my Chrome extensions and found something I didn't recognize. Don't remember what it was called, something innocuous, with a real logo. I uninstalled it, and I've had no trouble since then. Interestingly, the rogue extensions were named differently on...

Proxy server gets set every time I reboot

Every time I reboot my computer, the proxy server setting gets switched on. It drove me crazy the first time it happened, now that I know what it is, it's just an annoyance. What is doing this, and how do I stop it? According to some preliminary research I did, some people fingered Visual Studio...

    Galaxy S2 having trouble charging

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2, running Android 4. Been working fine for years, but now I think the USB port has taken some kind of physical damage. When I plug in a wall charger, it seems to struggle to make good contact, and even when it says it's charging, sometimes it charges, and sometimes it...

    lsass.exe memory leak

And "Protected Storage" has appeared in the list in the interim. I stopped all those services, except SamSs, which doesn't allow me to stop it, and the description says "... should not be disabled. No memory has been freed up by doing this, but at least it does appear to have stopped...

    lsass.exe memory leak

What are the possible consequences of disabling all these other services? (Also, I see "Protected Storage" has now reappeared in Process Explorer)

    lsass.exe memory leak

I disabled ESET and lsass is still growing. Does that rule out ESET as the culprit?

    lsass.exe memory leak

Ah, well, rebooted and left computer running for a while. Lsass.exe continuing to grow. According to Process Explorer, I'm only left with the following services registered under lsass: - KeyIso (CNG Key Isolation) - SamSs (Security Accounts Manager) - VaultSvc (Credential Manager) What next?

    lsass.exe memory leak

OK, will do... when I've finished my work for the day :) Meanwhile, what is EFS actually used for? What will be different if it's not running? What apps use encrypted files?

    lsass.exe memory leak

Autoruns: nothing at all under LSA Providers. EFS was set to Automatic. I've changed it to manual. Could that be it?

    lsass.exe memory leak

Over time lsass.exe consumes more and more memory, until there is no memory space left for other apps to run. That's the point when I am "forced" to reboot. Not by choice, no. I don't even know what it is. That may be a plan, but I don't fancy going for too long without AV protection. Any...
