The "Connections" and "LAN Settings" windows should looks like this.
If there's any dial-up connection in the "Connections" window, highlight it and then remove it so that section is blank.
Terry, correct me if I'm wrong.

My newly acquired computer was running XP and it connected to the internet through my modem just fine.I upgraded to windows 7 and now suddenly it only wants to connect to dial up.I don't get it.
IT is the only option shown.I have clicked on options this computer is not set u for and it shows some sort of broadband connection.Which of course is not available.

First of all the computer I'm on now,I used the same sort of upgrade disc and it went smoothly and worked fine.so an upgrade is possible. If you can help my computer is a Compaq Presario SR1320NX,PROD.#PP158AA
Yes if you follow Franks instructions above...
"What's the brand name and model name and model number of that computer?
Is it a desktop or a laptop/notebook?"
We will be able to determine the answer to your question. Normally if you have an OEM pc the drivers are located on the website of the pc manufacturer.
The computer was running XP and the Ethernet connection worked perfectly.I did the upgrade and now it doesn't even give me the option for a LAN connection.ERGO windows 7 somehow took away that option.
I have no idea what "same sort of upgrade disc" you're referring to.
As I previously said, you cannot upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 and have to do a clean install of Windows 7.
How did you activate Windows 7 in it during or after the install process?

I'm familiar with the Compaq Presario SR1320NX Desktop PC (PP158AA) because I owned one several years ago.
It was introduced in December 2004 and came with Windows XP Home Edition SP2.
Because it's over 10 years old, HP/Compaq has removed its support and troubleshooting and downloads sections, but has retained its specifications section.
According to that section, it came with this hardware:
AMD Sempron 3100+ 1.80 GHz processor
512 MB of DDR PC3200 RAM
80 GB IDE hard drive
DVD=/-RW disc drive ASUS K8S-LA (Salmon-GL6E) motherboard
SiS 760/964 chipset
SiS Mirage 2 graphics
Realtek ALC658C AC'97 audio
Realtek RTL8201CL 10/100 Mbps ethernet
56K data fax modem

I've requested a forum staff member to jump in because a possible issue may need to be addressed.
Can you hold off on any more comments and advice until then?
I'm shutting down for the night and will check back here in the morning.
I still don't understand what kind of error message you are getting that indicates an attempted dial up.
I believe this has already been requested, but I didn't notice the answer: what is listed in Device Manager under Network Adapters? Also, what, if any, warnings or errors are anywhere in Device Manager.
You seem to be saying that you have some kind of pirated and hacked version of Windows 7 that does an upgrade install from XP. Am I reading you correctly?
