After you do a clean install of Windows 7 SP1 in your computer and have all of its devices working, go to Windows Update and do a "Check for updates".
Because there will be over 200 important/recommended updates waiting, the scanning process may take hours before the list is displayed.
There's nothing that you can do about it but wait.

After you do a clean Windows install, you need to do the following for update to work properly:
- WindowsUpdateAgent-7.6-*.exe
<reboot>

- KB3112343
<reboot>

- KB3087039

- KB3078601

- KB3124275 (Install the version that matches your Internet Explorer version, I recommend you install IE11 first)

- KB3109094

Finally after about 1.30 to 2 hours I have the windows icon in my task manager / downloading the update
thanks again ...
You're lucky. It took me much longer than 1-1/2 to 2 hours before I was able to download and install the selected important/recommended updates.

< reboot>
Neither of your links work.
I just checked the Windows Update Agent file (wuaueng.dll) in this Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit desktop, and it's version 7.6.7601.18989
It must've gotten updated again during one of the later important/recommended updates.

Okay, I've removed the bad links. Thanks Frank.
This wasn't my work, it was done by someone who had the issue and couldn't get a clean install of Windows to update.

I'll change my notes and see if I can find a working link.

This isn't the exact version but it is 7.6.7601 it ends in 18847. Still is is closer to the latest version than the old links

Yes, all the servers are busy downloading 3 - 6GB of files to people who might not want to update so MS doesn't have the resources for those of us planning to stick to Win 7 until January 2020.

I turn on one computer, let it fiddle with updates while I work on another.
