The PSU has an efficiency rating of >70% (which isn't that great to start with, I would expect >80%), but lets take worst case scenario and assume it is running at 70% efficiency, this would equate to an approximate power output capability of 350w (70% of 500). Now when you consider that optimally you really don't want your system drawing more than 70% of your PSUs capacity (to prolong life, promote stability etc), then you really don't want to be drawing more than 245w from that PSU (again, this is worst case scenario). Personally, if I am running a dedicated card I wouldn't go for anything less than a 550w (absolute minimum) or normally 600w, good quality PSU. Good quality will have a >80% efficiency (or higher) and a 10 year manufacturers warranty.
Warranty is a good indicator of quality, I wouldn't go for anything with less that 5 years, yours appears to have a 2 year warranty which indicates to me that even the manufacturer doesn't have confidence in its longevity.
That? If so, what should be done to rectify? There's also the part I find strange that all SATA HDDs were unable to be read after the upgrade, but the SSD is.
That PSU was replaced by the shop I sent my former build to, where that build had the PSU busted, so they replaced with the current Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus - 500W Power Supply. I had no reason to doubt then, since computer repair shop and all.
Just saying:
If I saw smoke coming from the top of my tower I would freak
Then I would be disassembling it piece by piece and inspecting the mobo ....etc with a magnifying glass for burns
"Especially with expensive new parts"
