Can somebody please help me? My computer has gotten painfully slow...sometimes a webpage won't even load at all, when I pull up Google the window is not active...I have to click in/on it or the icon just flashes down by the start button...and that's if it even loads.

I've tried some scans and see that my computer is just riddled with all kinds of things I don't want and looks like malware. I also noticed something that ADWCLEANER found and its named Yahoo! Companion, but that doesn't even show up in my installed programs list. I need some serious help before this thing crashes entirely. I hear the drive chattering away constantly but I don't have anything open but this window. SOMTHING is running like mad and using up my CPU resources to cause this kind of slow response to everything.

Hello joeva71 and welcome to TSG,

My screen name is kevinf80, i`m here to help clean up your system. Make sure to run all scans from accounts with Administrator status, continue as follows please:

Change the download folder setting in the default Browser so all tools we may use are saved to the Desktop:

Google Chrome - Click the "Customize and control Google Chrome" button in the upper right-corner of the browser.

Choose Settings. at the bottom of the screen click the
"Show advanced settings..." link. Scroll down to find the Downloads section and click the Change... button. Select your desktop and click OK.

Mozilla Firefox - Click the "Open Menu" button in the upper right-corner of the browser.
Choose Options. In the downloads section, click the Browse button, click on the Desktop folder and the click the "Select Folder" button. Click OK to get out of the Options menu.

Internet Explorer - Click the Tools menu in the upper right-corner of the browser.
Select View downloads. Select the Options link in the lower left of the window. Click Browse and select the Desktop and then choose the Select Folder button. Click OK to get out of the download options screen and then click Close to get out of the View Downloads screen.
NOTE: IE8 Does not support changing download locations in this manner. You will need to download the tool(s) to the default folder, usually Downloads, then copy them to the desktop.

Change default download folder location in Edge -Boot to a user account with admin status, select start > file explorer > right click on "Downloads" folder and select "Properties"

In the new window select "Location" tab > clear the text field box and type in or copy/paste %userprofile%\Desktop > select "Apply" then "OK"

Be aware you are not changing the Browser download folder location, you are changing the user's download directory location.....

Next,

Follow the instructions in the following link to show hidden files:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/show-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-vista/

Next,

Please open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

  • On the Settings tab > Detection and Protection sub tab, Detection Options, tick the box "Scan for rootkits".
  • Under Non-Malware Protection sub tab Change PUP and PUM entries to Treat detections as Malware
  • Click on the Scan tab, then click on Scan Now >> . If an update is available, click the Update Now button.
  • A Threat Scan will begin.
  • When the scan is complete Apply Actions to any found entries.
  • Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear (if applicable), then click on Yes.
  • After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more.

To get the log from Malwarebytes do the following:

  • Click on the History tab > Application Logs.
  • Double click on the scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.
  • Click Export > From export you have three options:

Copy to Clipboard - if seleted right click to your reply and select "Paste" log will be pasted to your reply
Text file (*.txt) - if selected you will have to name the file and save to a place of choice, recommend "Desktop" then attach to reply
XML file (*.xml) - if selected you will have to name the file and save to a place of choice, recommend "Desktop" then attach to reply
  • Please use "Copy to Clipboard, then Right click to your reply > select "Paste" that will copy the log to your reply…

If Malwarebytes is not installed follow these instructions first:

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
  • Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  • A 14 day trial of the Premium features is pre-selected. You may deselect this if you wish, and it will not diminish the scanning and removal capabilities of the program.
  • Click Finish. Follow the instructions above....

Next,

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system (32 bit or 64 bit). If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

If your security alerts to FRST either accept the alert or disable your security and allow FRST to run...

(Windows 8/10 users will be prompted about Windows SmartScreen protection - click More information and Run.)

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Let me see those logs in your reply...

Thank you,

Kevin..

Here are the FRST results...I want to clear everything AVG and Kodak from the computer for sure. I learned years ago on an older computer that Kodak Easy Share loads a lot of stuff on the computer but all the installed items are 'hidden'. There is some way to make all those things appear in the Installed Programs list and I had to uninstall them one-by-one then go to Kodak's website and run some other uninstaller too.

WOW, what an intensive scan that SOPHOS is.
So, I did everything in the order you put it:

Run Fix
Remove AVG: It first said there were no components (removed by fix?), I did the 'run anyway option' and still got 2 prompts to restart.
Remove Kodak: This is way different than I did it before where the fix unhid everything so I could see them all in Installed Programs so I could delete them one-by-one THEN run Kodak's remover, but this was quicker...thank you.

I ran ADW Cleaner and it found nothing so there is nothing to post.
RUN SOPHOS: Odd thing I noticed is that the first 2 objects it found, my Microsoft Security Essentials sprung up a notification by the clock stating "detected threats are being cleaned...no action required". Then there were a couple of those from MSE that were NOT in response to something SOPHOS found. Anyway, when Sophos finally ended it only found those first two things it found in the first 2 minutes of the scan.

FIXLOG is first followed by SOPHOS report, then in a separate reply, I will ask the couple of things I want to finish up on this computer. Thanks.

Questions remaining:

I want to know if I never use any Microsoft Online Services, can I get rid of .NET Framework?

Do I need all of those C++ installs or can those go too?

What are these and do I need them: MSXML 4.0 SP2 KB954430 and KB973688

If I've already got a GWX icon in my tray by the clock urging me to upgrade, is it too late to install the dashboard and block/turn-off anything 10? This isn't a Dell, so it shouldn't just automatically install 10 on this HP system I hope (I've heard that Dell's have been getting the upgrade with NO input from the user).

Saved the best for last: I created the Administrator account on the advice of a different forum years ago. I've never used it since, I cannot find the note with the password and I've exhausted all the passwords I would think I would have used but I don't want to lock myself out my computer entirely. Is there really a GOOD way to either terminate the account or retrieve my password?

OK, off to close everything and let SOPHO fix the 2 malware items.

Apologies for the late reply, answers to your questions:

Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables do you need them, i`d say yes. Assorted redistributables and shared libraries are often installed on your PC by programs that need them. Removing them, while tempting, can be risky and may stop such programs from running.

MS.NET Framework software were probably installed by a program that needs them. They don't do anything until a program needs them so should have no effect on your system. I`d leave them alone...

MSXML 4.0 read here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSXML Also MSXML 4.0 SP2 KB954430 is a security update for MSXML 4.0 to patch vulnerabilities, same for KB973688

I do not help with password recovery on any windows system, a simple google search will help you with that, here is a link found on google - http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/passrecovery.htm

How to remove Windows 10 upgrade nag - http://www.tweaking.com/articles/pages/remove_windows_nag_icon_to_upgrade_to_windows_10,1.html

Next,

If no remaining issues or concerns clean up as follows:

To remove Zemana and Sophos use the following Uninstaller tool:

Download GeekUninstaller from here: http://www.geekuninstaller.com/download (Choose free version) Save Geek.zip to your Desktop. (Visit the Home page at that link for necessary information)

Extract Geek Uninstaller and save to your Desktop. There is no need to install, the executable is portable and can also be run from a USB if required.

Run the tool, the main GUI will populate with installed programs list,

Left click on Program name to highlight that entry.

Select Action from the Menu bar, then Uninstall from there follow the prompts.

If Uninstall fails open the "Action" menu one more time and use "Force Removal" option

Next,

Download "Delfix by Xplode" and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror"

If your security program alerts to Delfix either, accept the alert or turn your security off.

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following items are checked:

  • Remove disinfection tools <----- this will remove tools we have used.
  • Purge System Restore <--- this will remove all previous and possibly exploited restore points, a new point relative to system status at present will be created.
  • Reset system settings <--- this will reset any system settings back to default that were changed either by us during cleansing or malware/infection

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Any remnant files/logs from tools we have used can be deleted…

Well Kevin,

After the final clean-ups, I noticed my Microsoft Security Essentials icon vanished. When I went into Windows Update, there was a definitions update for Security Essentials...then Windows Update froze my system up. I exited out of it and uninstalled the my current version of MSE and went to re-install it....I've had to do that before...so this time it refuses to install!!! I Googled the error code and there was all this stuff about .Net Framework...which you told me not to touch so I didn't. So I run some .Net Framework cleanup utility which purged all instances of it from my system and did the recommended re-installs and did the Windows Update for .Net Framework which according to the Google searches I did is supposed to fix the problem. After a restart I went to try to download Microsoft Security Essentials again and keep getting the same error code. I've NEVER had a problem installing a MSE before and after following the steps to fix that error it still won't install. Is there something you can look at to see why? I'm real nervous not having the protection. The error code I keep getting is 0x80070643.

I just ran a system restore to the earliest one left and that solved the Security Essentials issue.

One last issue and we can close this thread: sometimes when I open a link or a new web page, the page does not automatically become the active window, but rather the icon in the lower left of the toolbar just flashes at me and I have to click it to bring the page up.

#11 ·
If you had ran the clean up successfully all restore points would have been removed, a fresh restore point would have been created with the date that Delfix was completed. You seem to indicate that system restore was used, quote "to the earliest one left" that indicates there was more than one present. If that is correct we may be back to square one...
Regarding the issue with the browser, which one do you refer to, Internet Explorer or Firefox...

#12 ·
Sorry this reply is SO late:

The other restore points were from Microsoft/Windows (the automatic downloads of critical updates that were done during this). I used the delfix restore point as stated.

I use IE and not quite sure which version; I'venever used Chrome or Firefox...just Internet Explorer. It's so strange...it never happens on my laptop, just the PC. Mostly it is Google...I open it and instead of the 'cursor' flashing in the field to start typing, the page is on the screen but it isn't active. I have to physically click in the field that you type what you want to search to get the window active. It happens occasionally at work on a Windows Server but that's the only other place. I'm wondering if by opening Google, some other thing activates in the background....at work when it happens its a retarded pop-up from the Xerox printer "determining printer status". That stupid thing deactivates whatever window I am working in but does NOT come to the top of multiple windows so I KNOW its there so I can close it and continue what I was doing....our work IT infrastructure is garbage.

Run the following:

Scan with ESET Online Scanner

This step can only be done using Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
Temporary disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware protection - instructions here.
Please visit ESET Online Scanner website.

Click there Run ESET Online Scanner.

If using Internet Explorer:

  • Accept the Terms of Use and click Start.
  • Allow the running of add-on.
If using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome:
  • Download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe that you'll be given link to.
  • Double click esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe.
  • Allow the Terms of Use and click Start.

To perform the scan:

  • Select "Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications"
  • Make sure that Remove found threats is unchecked.
  • Scan archives is checked.
  • In Advanced Settings: Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications and Enable Anti-Stealth technology are checked.
  • Under "Enable Stealth Technology select "Change" select any extra drives in that window.
  • Click Start
  • The program will begin to download it's virus database. The speed may vary depending on your Internet connection.
  • When completed, the program will begin to scan. This may take several hours. Please, be patient.
  • Do not do anything on your machine as it may interrupt the scan.
  • When the scan is done, click Finish.
  • A logfile will be created at C:\Program Files (x86)\ESET\ESET Online Scanner. Open it using Notepad.

Please include this logfile in your next reply.

Don't forget to re-enable security software!

Sorry again for the absence. Today I had a couple of issues happen: Microsoft Security Essentials was red (usually means I have to run a scan), but this time it said its definitions were out of date (???). MSE is auto-updating with no way to make it manual only. So I click to update and after several hours I get a notice that a connection cannot be made...please check my internet connection. Other browser windows open just fine if not very slowly again.

Then I see I forgot to turn OFF the stupid Windows Update and it said I had several security updates to download and install, so I click to download the security updates and THAT gets stuck on downloading updates....progress 0% after a very long time.

So I came on here and see that you had a reply to my last post. At this moment, MSE has finally moved off of 'searching for updates' and is on 'downloading updates.' When that is done I will run the ESET and post back.

I just cannot understand WHY this PC has so many problems all of the time but my laptop has gone years without a problem and they are both running windows 7.

GRRRR! So MSE got stuck again and even after clicking CANCEL UPDATE, it refused. I went to the link you provided to see how to disable security programs, and even Microsoft is killing me here. It says to click the start button and find settings (with a little gear icon next to it). That does not exist, even after searching for it I found NOTHING! I then go to SERVICES and see that my Windows Defender is set to Manual and is not even running! Double GRRRR. I had to do a forced shutdown to get MSE to stop its nonsense. Once I get that real-time protection turned off there, I should be ready to download and run the suggested ESET. This issue of this PC constantly causing me hours of grief has got me wondering where my sledge-hammer is right now.

I am done with this! I started that ESET scan, a few hours later I go to check on the progress and the screen is blank! just the border of the scanner window and a field of white where there used to be the scan progress/time elapsed/etc. NOTHING is showing. Now what?

So, I thought a night of sleep and a fresh set of eyes would help my disposition a bit and alas it has not. After 4 hours of mind-numbing frustration last night I've spent another 5 hours already this morning and am thwarted at every single step. Windows update still refuses to work. Microsoft Security Essentials shows that it is searching for updates, then downloads and installs updates, then starts over again, then I get a error telling me a connection cannot be made and to check my internet connection. Again, nothing wrong with my connection.

I've tried several times to download and run the Windows Installer Troubleshooter. I get the prompt at the bottom of my screen and click RUN and absolutely nothing happens. After 6 different tries to download and run, I finally get it to run and it says it can't find any problems. Yet when I try to download updates, I have received the following 2 error codes: 0x80070002 and 0x80070005. I've google-searched these errors and none of the fixes work and that is if I even get them to run at all.

I just do not know what to do. When I used to have XP the solution was "easy"...re-install the OS from scratch. Unfortunately, Microsoft decided that it's customers do not deserve a system disk when they purchase a computer with their OS. My first attempt to create a system image failed (twice) so I still do not even have a system disk that I can just re-install my Windows 7. I have read there are ways to just order one using the registration key on the computer itself....REALLY, now I have to pay for the system disk on top of all the hours of my life lost just trying to get my computer to work properly. I have grown so full of hatred for Microsoft but am terrified to switch to MAC.

I have used EVERY bit of advice from your forum to keep my system running properly. I have HOST files installed, update my security features often, and now none of them want to work correctly. It really appears to be a direct attempt from Microsoft to FORCE 7 users to upgrade to 10 out of nothing but pure frustration at the growing problems with 7 that they do not want to support.

Do you have any ideas of what I can do when even the scans you suggest refuse to operate through completion?

I would like to but ESET blanked-out on me again. I gave it over 7 hours, come back to see nothing showing, just the frame of the window, nothing but all white. I sure wish I could give you screenshot. How long should ESET take? I even looked for the logfile in the Program Files(X86) but the ESET folder is not there. Should this scan be taking even longer than 7 hours?

#21 ·
Well Kevin, I just do not know what to tell you. At about 10 minutes before the expected end-time of the ESET scan I planted myself in front of this screen. As you know the orange banner near the top of the window flashes different messages about upgrading full-time protection; On one of those flashes, the entire lower section of the screen changed: I could still read all the left column: TARGET:/FILES SCANNED/INFECTED FILES (it found 1) etc. But the right side where all the info fields are went black, the number 1 in the Infected files field turned red so I could still see it in the black field. The progress bar also went from green to red. So I watched and as soon as I heard the drive stop clicking away, the screen went all white on me again...no buttons to click and the X to exit didn't work. I did uninstall of I and reinstalled fresh when I ran this one. I still do not see any log-file anywhere. I clicked the Windows icon (Start Button) and did a search for ESET and it found nothing. I attached a Word document with a screenshot of the blank screen I got all three times I've run it.

Kevin, yet another new development: I cannot even OPEN windows update now. I go to Control Panel/System and Security/Windows Update. When I click on the general Windows Update line I get the 'working' circle, but it never even opens. What is going on with this thing? I can't get you an ESET log, I can't even open Windows Update. I just don't know what to do. This is getting worse by the day.

After what I experienced with windows update last night I think I may have to. I found a site that showed all these KB updates I need to manually install to get Windows Update to work properly...of course, even the stand-alone installer doesn't work.

I have to contact Microsoft and try to purchase a system disk since one was not provided with my computer. Thanks for your efforts.

Hi Kevin. I found one more tip on the forum about manually installing the Windows Update fixes and it actually worked! WU now works just fine. I want to try to run ESET one more time...knowing that it found a threat but I can't see what is making me crazy.

My computer came with MS Office Suite 2010. My biggest concern with getting a new system disk, it won't be included. I don't know if it was part of that particular 7 package or something HP did to the computer to sweeten the deal.

Three questions:

1) Do you have any other scanner that might detect what ESET found (MWB didn't detect it)?

2) Should I try running SOPHOS again?

3) Is there a free utility you can link me to that will clean-up my registry safely and effectively? I fell prey to a site that scans and showed me over 1200 errors, then when I go to run the fix only then I get slapped with having to choose which payment option I prefer. I can't believe there isn't a free utility that works without causing more harm than good. If not a free one, can you direct me to a trustworthy vendor?
