 Hello! My computer has been behaving very strangely the last day or two. For one thing I got a pop-up alert stating that updates needed to be installed and computer required a restart. So I restarted and it was taking like 3 hours to update I swear!! No exaggeration! I finally got really suspicious and shut of the computer, and when I restarted it I tried to go to the BIOS Menu to start in safe mode, but it just said it was returning to the previous version of Windows.

Additionally, there was an add-on added without me adding it. It appeared in my browser toolbar after this squirrely update occurred. And last but not least , in the last hour I have received two AVG Threat notifications. The first Yellow, the second Red.

** Side Note** The first time I was helped here I did not see the thread to until it was marked "solved." I meant no disrespect to the technician helping me, I was just unaware that I was supposed to communicate solved.** Since that occurred I was assisted by the same technician and saw it through to its completion, having learned the proper way to close a thread. :notworthy: ***

Probably unnecessary to include that, but just would like it to be known so that it does not turn someone off who would otherwise help.

Appreciate any help with this you could offer. Thanks!!!

I am willing to try but first I have a couple of questions.

1. How long is it usually supposed to take? Even if you cannot give me a specific time, can you tell me if it goes say for 8 hours and is not finished should I abandon the update?

2. I am very concerned that this update will wipe out my desktop as other W10 updates have done in the past and I have had to take it back to a restore point. I have a ton of stuff on my desktop as well in other areas for my school (full time student here). Since W10 wiped out my ability to write to blank media I do not have a back up. I am very frustrated about that issue for sure. But if it wipes out my desktop and say all other drives but the C: drive and I have no restore points. I would be ruined. I have been putting my current school folder on a flash drive to be certain I dont lose anything I am currently working on, but this kind of constant worry is counter productive, so what can I do to avoid this?

The others on show are CD/DVD drives, also card readers and USB ports. The folders above the drives are defaults, do you normally not see those...

Can you check and see if your CD/DVD drives work. Obviously windows does see them so drivers will have been installed

#34 ·
Hey Kev.

Normally I do not see those no. IT would be great if W10 finally delivered drivers for that hardware, that earlier version of the same rendered useless. I will def check to see if it actually works, however, I am currently studying for finals and cannot really do it at the moment. In the meantime, if you wouldn't mind, could you answer those two questions I asked regarding the W10 Anniversary Update?

Thanks so much for your help to clarify those concerns for me.

Best,
Kal

Hit me with those questions again please.... One other point regarding W10 and Backups, Wio has retained image backup facility from W7 also the option to create a recovery CD, obviously your DVD drive needs to be working to burn to a disc...
To create a system image is straightforward, I recommend you save the image to any compatible drive other than "C" and if possible an external drive that can be disconnected easily. Ransomware infections are very good at infecting all working hard drives and encrypting all data. An image saved to an external drive is very beneficial..
I`ve attached an image for reference.

To create the image is very straightforward. Select > Control Panel > System and Security > Backup and Restore (Windows 7) from there select the required option and follow the prompts... Same with the system repair disc....
Having a saved image is great as you can recover to that image from a either a simple issue or catastrophic failure.... W10 has other backup possibilities I can tell you about that later if you want..

I actually have an image created that way and I replace it every week, I also use a third party back up application called AX64 Time machine, have a read here http://ax64.com/. I save that backup to D drive on my laptop, that drive is protected with BitLocker...

Cheers,

Kevin...

To check updates do the following:

Click on Start > Settings > Update and Security > Update History. You should see a list of Windows updates, that list will include failed and successful updates and their KB number.

Post the KB from the most recent failed update...

Hello Kal,

Lets try a manual install of the anniversary update, open this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12387/windows-10-update-history Download and install Windows 10 anniversary update.... Is it successful?

If the update is not successful re-boot, go to wndows update history: Start > Settings > Update and Security > Update History

The history will show the unsuccessful entry, directly underneath is link named "Failed to install on date of attempt" Click on that link for a brief explanation, what does that say, is there an error code....

Go to this link: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-updates-fail-to-install Follow the advice, specifically items 5, 6, and 7....

Let me know if the anniversary update is successful or not..

Hey Kev,

Okay so the update was not successful. But there is no information regarding the failed update at all. I don't know if this matters at all, but the way you tell me to get to the Update History does not work, I actually have to go to Start>Settings>Update and Security>Advanced Options> Update History. The display is the same as the one I posted yesterday, so it does not even show any of the failed updates. Also, do you still want me to go to the other link you posted in your last thread?

Hiya Kal,

There must be a reason why the anniversary update does not happen for you. Yes go to the link I gave and have a read. Item 5 is a trouble shooter that will reset settings that maybe causing the problem, try that first.
If the update still fails try item 6, that is a tool that will d/l in zip format, unzip to your Desktop, run the tool then try the update once more.
If both of those methods do not help reboot then try item 7......
If all three items fail to help i`ll ask one of the guys who has more experience with system issues to help....

Cheers,

Kevin...

Hey Kev,
SO Number 5 at that link is a bust. I moved to number 6. Downloaded it ran it and got this error message , clicked on details and copied it for you to look at. I will await your reply.

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Hiya Kal,

Give Item 5 troubleshooter d/l a try from this link: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262

Do not save the file, use the the option to "open with" Diagnostic TroubleShooting Wizzard (default)

If that also fails move onto item 7 and run the system update readiness tool, then try the anniversary update again....

I will be offline from approx 23:00 GMT tonight until approx 20:00 Thurs 13th Oct....

Regards,

Kevin...
