I have a used Motorola SB6121 motorola cable modem that is used.
I would like connect it to my home network system witHTime Warner cable.
The people that had the modem before me said the used it for
Time Warner cable service. Of course, I need to hardware
install the device.
After that what do I need to do before I call Time Warner
up and tell them to initialize the device?
There's no "settings" to technically keep. All the settings it would need is ip for LaN and wan, which if ur using TWC would be DHCP assigned over the coax.
So after TWC activates my device I can turn power off of it during the day
and then apply power to my cable modem at night when I am using it in
my network system. The should be no problem turning power on & off the
device. Is that correct?
Well actually you don't want to do that. I have had ppl at work ask me the same thing because theyre concerned about it running their light bill higher or cause they don't like it being powered on when not using it. Well I always tell them that its DESIGNED to be left on....they use very little power today and are fairly energy efficient.
Whats the reason , however, that you personally, are considering unplugging and replugging it ?
I guess it is just a thing about leaving things on and starting fires when I am not at home.
I noticed that some modems and electronics get a little warm; some maybe get hot when I put may hands on them. I am not comfortable with that when I am away. I guess it would probably get ok for me to leave it on.
As Andrew says, there's nothing more you need to do other than connect up the modem to the coax cable, plug in an Ethernet cable to the modem, and power it up. I don't know if there are any specific settings TWC might push down to the modem. I haven't dug that deep into it but I do recall with DSL there were some settings which Verizon wanted to see on the modem.
As far as worrying about leaving it on 24/7, this shouldn't be a concern. The modem doesn't even have an on/off switch. I know because I'm using the same modem right now with my ISP. I've left the modem on for about a year between reboots. And the only reason I did a power cycle was to see if resetting the modem would help in restoring Internet service....which actually turned out to be my ISP's issue.
I've been using a Motorola SB5101 for at least 10 years and it has been on 24 x 7 except for 8 1/2 days in 2011 when we had no electricity. (I turn computers and monitors off but I let the modem and router on all the time and I've never had a problem).
I have a Motorola SB6121 ready to swap out for the old DOCSIS 2 modem.
