Avast installs and works fine in Windows Vista.
Microsoft Security Essentials will soon be dropping support, so you'll get pop-up nags if you use it in Windows Vista.
With the introduction of version 3x, Malwarebytes is no longer a stand-alone app and is now a full security suite and includes antivirus.
Do not try to install Avast or any other other antivirus app while it's installed.
This is all it does:
Our engineers have now made your best defense against advanced threats even better. Malwarebytes 3.0 now offers four malware-fighting modules:
Yes...it was supposed to be....but MB sent out emails to licensed holders a long time ago explaining this. I wish I kept mine. So there's no AV with it anymore.
Just ask Rich_M.....I forwarded the email to him as he was thinking the very same thing.
Anti-malware is the new name for antivirus
A virus is s a subset of malware
The use of Anti-virus is gradually being discontinued because in the real world a proper traditional virus is now very rare. People think an anti-malware does not protect against or defend against viruses. That was the case several years ago when an antivirus did everything, but was weaker on Adware, pests & pups. In those days an antimalware program dealt with adware, spyware, pests and pups, but rarely Trojans and viruses.
Now the names antivirus and antimalware are interchangeable
The correct name is antimalware which covers all types of malware including Viruses, Trojans, Adware, pests, PUPS, ransomware ( which is a subset of Trojans)
Viruses are self propagating and self replicating ( copies itself) Trojans & other forms of malware don't
MS AV aka defender works differently to every other AV or Antimalware product on the market. It is integrated into the OS in away no other product is allowed to. Defender will refuse to open if any other Traditional AV is installed, because they use similar OS hooks. MBAM doesn't hook the OS in the same way because it cannot disinfect OS files like a traditional AV can ( at this time)
However MBAM & many other products don't work in the same way as "traditional AntiViruses"
MBAM is weak on traditional viruses. It will fix them but normally by deleting the entire infected file
A traditional AV will attempt to disinfect an infected file that has been infected by a virus
Now I work with the majority of antivirus/antimalware companies and speak to analysts most days. We almost never see "proper" file infecting viruses and 99% of current malware are Trojans, ransomware, PUPS and pests.
We do see file injecting Trojans frequently, but modern OS design has made them much harder and OS files tend to be protected by the OS. What you do see are Trojans etc injecting themselves into processes, not the actual file.
So for example a ransomware Trojan will inject itself into SVChost. BUT it isn't infecting SVChost.exe but the svchost process on the computer. MBAM can deal with those.
Note: this is talking about MBAM PREMIUM not free. MBAM want to be and are trying to be a fully featured Antivirus/antimalware that deals with everything. They are on their way to that, but still have some way to go. The problem is that some of their program is very similar to traditional antiviruses now so it is potentially dangerous to install it alongside any other antivirus/antimalware that has any sort of real time protection. It should be fine with a scan only program, but you will probably find that, you need to disable MBAM to run the other scanner, to stop files being locked by both at time
