IMO, veracrypt is one of if not the most secure encryption system available to the public and it's free.

Essentially, you use it to build a container that holds anything you want encrypted.
Dragging and dropping a file or folder into an open container encrypts it. Only the proper key opens the container. You can add as much as you want till the container is full. You decide how big you want the container to be.
The open container is read as if it's a partition on your hard drive.

You can also encrypt the hard drive as a whole.

The container (volume) only takes up as much space on a drive as you designate when you create it and you can delete it just as you would a file or folder.
When you open it, it acts as and you'll see it as a virtual drive in your list of drives under My Computer.
Sounds a bit complicated, but I assure you, it's not difficult to use once you see it in use.
