Permissions and Ownership Problem

Hi there
Until recently i was able to move folders etc to an external hdd which i have connected to my router, now when i try i am unable to as apparently i don't have the permissions to do so.
I am logged in as admin so no problem there, i accessed the hdd and and checked permission and ownership and think i found the problem, the current owner is root (Unix User\root) which is not me, when i have tried to change owner i get 'unable to change owner' access is denied.
When the hdd is connected directly to my pc the problem is gone and i am the owner with full permissions. Maybe a lost cause but i wonder could anyone here help TIA.
Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

According to your log, the copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit in your HP computer does not have Service Pack 1 installed.

Please do the following in your HP computer:
Download MGADiag and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program.
Click "Continue".
Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
Click the "Copy" button, then leave the report window open.
Paste the report back here in your next reply.

What is the exact model number(M/N) and product number(P/N) and serial number(S/N) on that HP?

What is the exact Windows version on its Certificate-Of-Authenticity sticker?

I'm guessing you have a HP Pavilion g6 series notebook, but only you can confirm that.
