Dell Laptop battery failure

Have had this laptop for a good while and it has always worked ok.
Gradually, the time it took to recharge the battery took longer and longer.
I always have the laptop plugged in when I am using it because the battery life has always been lousy.
Now the front of the laptop has a flashing red light - message that says battery has experienced a catastrophic failure and needs to be replaced.

Question - if I always have it plugged in when I use it, is getting a new battery critical? Dell batteries are pretty pricey.

Question - can I buy a laptop battery not made by Dell and cheaper - or is this a bad idea?

Question - is this problem big enough to justify getting a new laptop - think I've had this one since 2011

Here's the sysinfo stuff:

Answer 1 - you can use it without a battery.

Answer 2 - you can get a cheaper battery, chances are IMO it will be fine but see Answer 1 !

Answer 3 - That's your decision. What model is the Dell you have now ?

Thank you so much for the answers! They were very helpful - good to know I can use it plugged in regardless of battery not charged.
Will seriously consider getting a cheaper battery - thanks for your input

I have a Dell Inspiron N7110 64 bit Intel i5 core 240GHz 6 GB RAM

You're welcome. :)

It's better if you remove the battery if you use a laptop with the power lead connected a lot.

(The 2 main things that shorten a laptop battery's useful life are heat and the number of times it's charged/discharged).

Nice laptop.
