Hello everyone.
I purchased a new laptop(Acer Aspire 3) a few days ago, and I have Avast Premium Security as my main defense. This Morning I scanned my Wi-Fi and Avast found open ports in my router, I am no techie so I do not know what to do, or what means for my safety, please help.
One thing I would also do is to run the utility, ShieldsUP!, from Gibson Research to see what it has to say. Steve Gibson has been around forever and this is one of the best scanners I've ever found in terms of looking at port vulnerabilities.
More details would be needed regarding what ports are actually open, and whether any of those are because your ISP keeps it/them open for maintenance purposes. I had one port I could not close because of that when using Verizon DSL.
I tend to do the File Sharing and All Service Ports tests. Since the Common Ports are covered in the All Service Ports I just don't do that test, though you certainly can for a quick check of those used most commonly.
My current configuration for All Service Ports comes back with all in Stealth mode (green block) since I've changed ISPs and my current one does not have any open ports for maintenance.
How an ISP would know who your bank is and that they'd need an open port is a complete mystery. If they'd said that they use it for device update purposes, that would have made sense.
