Virus or human

The situation is embarrassing. But please help. My question is whether the virus or something else (malware, pup etc) can leave a history in the browser that user never use and leave a "trace" similar to a person behaviour. It's about my boyfriend's laptop. He uses Google Chrome, but he also has Edge. I sometimes need this laptop for studying, and I decided to use Edge. There was a setting to clean the story after every browser close, and I turned it off. Did my stuff and saved it, everything was ok. A week later I needed it again and there appeared every two days the history of porn sites. Pornhub and another popular site. (Which led to doubts, because i thought viruses are always "Noname-sites"). Moreover, each time there are about 20 entries including a start page, searching pages, video pages, etc. Every "session" lasts about 20 minutes and at this time there is pause in Chrome-history. Boyfriend said it was a PUP. And the antivirus found on his computer one file from the VLCplayer’s download with PUP-mark. I have a suspicion that this is a lie. Please help to understand, because 10 years of relationships are under question now.
PS. Everyone has different moral attitude to this issue, please lets not discuss this thing.
