Thanks. There was a list or library of various exe files one could use to look up. It was an alpha list so you could enter or look up say, crss.exe or whatever and get a good description of what various exe files are and what they do. I used it often for checking the validity of exe files found in the process list or elsewhere. Thanks.

Hello joedakota,
The list is not found anywhere, it is maintained by staff behind behind web site.

You may want to try Process Explorer

This program will tell you who is the publisher of executable (if digitally signed)
You can also use it to jump to virus total report for any executable. (right click -> Check virus total)

There used to be a list available to the general public but I can't remember the name or whether it's been kept current.

There are other tools you can use though to check specific files. Here are a few links:

Bleeping Computer has a Startup Database where you can search files:

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

There is another utility called SystemLookUp you can use for the same purpose. This is an older tool but I believe it's still being maintained.

https://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list=2

Lastly, you can use Virus Total to upload a file from your computer for analysis. You can also use it to check URLs which can be handy:
