I currently have a Netgear x65 and am looking to upgrade as it is having some issues. For example, please excuse my lack of terminology, a have my computer connected via Ethernet cable from the router and I am getting 200 mbs. If I bypass my router, I am getting close to 700 mbs. I am assuming the "switch" is failing.
Anyway, I have 2600 total square feet I am trying to cover so I do not think I need a mesh system. Basically any suggestions on a good wireless router? I have Youtubetv, and Xbox, Echos, security cams, sensors, etc., to give you an idea. Also, I am teaching from home so I am constantly on Zoom.
1) Make sure all of your equipment, such as your router, switches and Ethernet cables are capable of handling Gbps (Gigabits Per Second) speeds ... not the older Mbps (Megabits Per Second). For example, make sure all of your Ethernet cables are "CAT6".
There may not be anything wrong with your router. Your router could be performing fine. There is a fallacy with many people that they think because an all in one router has Gig ports on it that the performance should approach Gig speeds. This is totally incorrect. The only time this is valid is if you're looking at just a switch. Because you're moving data between the switch ports to the firewall/router function of your all in one wireless router, there is going to be a performance consideration. Firewall/routing functions take up processing power. That is why there is a CPU in your wireless router. Most SOHO wireless routers do not have performance specs listed for how they perform with routing packets and also inspection of said packets through the firewall portion.
As an example, my SonicWall TZ400W is rated to over 1Gbps for stateful packet inspection firewall functionality. Turning on deep packet inspection drops the performance to 400 Mbps. Turning on SSL inspection, IDS/IPS drops performance even more. And this is with the firewall having GigE ports.
For whatever reason, I cannot disable the wireless. I went in and unchecked all boxes and applied the changes and it was still broadcasting a signal that I could connect to.
Temporarily change the WiFi password in the router so your computer will not be able to connect to it automatically.
