How can I encrypt and password protect a scanned PDF so I can send it to someone without requiring him to install any programs? We're both Windows 10. I know that Adobe can do this but you have to pay through the nose. Any other suggestions? Thanks.
Yo could - provided that the recipient is allowed to see the original - use 7-Zip or something like this to compress it and have the archive password protected.
Just be aware that many Email clients do not allow zip file attachments. To circumvent that you give it another extension and "just" tell the recipient to rename it.
I was already referred to 7-Zip by a guru coworker [me, I'm an aging IBM z/OS guru who knows about computers in general, but not much about the details of how PCs work]. But I got the impression that the recipient would have to run 7-Zip's software to decrypt the packet. Is this the case, or can he read it with the software already on his Windows system? He's my tax preparer and his system is probably loaded with sensitive information, so I don't think it's reasonable to ask him to run third-party programs.
I'd send him a CD except the P.O. recently kludged the mailboxes so that nothing but a thin letter can go into them.
