I recently allowed someone use of my laptop to access their Yahoo email over a dial-up connection. When I next used the laptop myself, the desktop had re-arranged to the default top left screen configuration and the laptop was noticeably slower in operation. It now appears to operate at 100% CPU usage, whatever programme I attempt to run. I have run Spybot (nothing detected). According to the "user" they did nothing but read their email and did not download anything (that they were aware of). I include a Hijack log. Can anyone suggest a cause/solution?

Further to previous post, I note:
    1. There is apparently a known issue with services.exe and win 2000 that can cause this effect (but why has it only happened now?) I will attempt a Microsoft update and see if that solves the problem.
    2. The CPU usage appears to increase when the laptop cooling fan cuts in. There are two fans, one of which has recently stopped working coincidentally with the problem occurring. Could the additional load (if there is any) on the remaining fan somehow be having an effect on CPU usage?

    Any advice gratefully received.

Nothing's really jumping out at me based on your HJT Log. Do you have a PDA that you sync with using this laptop?

Yes - I have a Palm One - using version 4.1.4 palm desktop.
I have also run RegCleaner (v4.3) since the last post, and now find on boot-up that the laptop tries to install a document viewer that it can no longer find. Can't find any reference to that in the RegCleaner backup file. I can get past this by opening windows task manager and shutting down the process, but otherwise it persists in attempting to install it. (Guess I shouldn't have run Regcleaner). Otherwise cpu usage stays low (1 or 2%) - until the cooling fan starts up - when it fluctuates between 20 to 100%. On opening any other application, cpu jumps to 100%.

Further to previous post - appear to have succeeded in reinstalling the Document Viewer - also, cpu problem appears to have reduced somewhat - no longer flat lining at 100% usage but fluctuating between 20% and 60%, with the cooling fan running. Maybe running RegCleaner did some good after all.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Internat.exe] internat.exe

sticks out to me like a sore thumb... from what I recall, this may be BLASTER related.

Click the red/white triangle, and ask an admin to move this thread over to the Malware forum, and a certified expert (yellow shield) will walk you through steps for removal.

The only Internat.exe file I can find is in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 which I understand is the correct location for the genuine Internat.exe
I will nonetheless ask for this thread to be moved as you suggest.
    Thankyou.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...o/bt_side.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...rch.yahoo.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...rch.yahoo.com/

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...rch.yahoo.com/

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

I don't see any reason to move the thread to malware.

Post back and let us know if you are still having problems.

You're welcome. You should update your version of hijackthis too.

    • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.

Seems the underlying problem persists. Connecting via Broadband today (just a few minutes ago), I attempted to run World of Warcraft. Initially, the game ran as previously (without problem), but, as soon as the cooling fan started up, the frame-rate dropped to 1fps, or even 0 fps and the CPU Usage flatlined at 100%. Having shut down WOW and the fan still running, the CPU Usage showing now is spiky - between 9% and 60%. Running Hijackthis used 100% cpu. There appears to be an obvious association with the cooling fan running. Could this mean that I have a graphics card problem? Overheating? Something else?
HT Log appended in case that helps.

I'm not able to help you with the hardware problems. You should post in the hardware forum for that.

    You log looks fine.
