All right. For some reason unbeknownst to me, my computer's RAM is... well... FUBAR. On startup, I'm lucky to break 110, and never does my available physical memory reach over 150 MB. I haven't got a whole lot running in the background, and most of it is antispyware/virus stuff.
I'm running XP SP2. And this is sort of a big problem since I have a 933 MHz processor.
Ran Avast!, Spybot, and Ad-Aware, as I do regularly, with no notable change.
    Questions? Suggestions? Thanks.

How much memory do you have installed? Is it 512MB or is that including the pagefile? Anti-spyware and Anti-virus programs are probably some of the largest users of system resources.

Can you post some screenshots of Task Manager showing the processes and the memory/processor useage?

sure... and I have 512 mb installed, as I said...
Bear in mind that things like AIM and Firefox aren't always running... or Paint for that matter... obviously...

CPU usage... forgot what the hell I was opening...

Note: When I took the memory screenshot, available physical mem was hanging around 170-180 mb.

Well you have too much running is what the problem is. I see Avast and AVG entries, not good to be running two anti-virus packages.

I also see ViewPoint running which I'd uninstall.

And at the moment you have maany other applications runnign like the Google Accelerator and Firefox runnign which are using large amounts of memory.

And possibly even some suspicious files.

Go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

    • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

you have a lot of garbage running in the background that is consumming resources.

in my xpro machines, i only have symantec av loading in msconfig/startup.
eliminate stuff you don't need, reboot and you'll see an improvement.

I figured as much, but when I look at what I've got... it doesn't seem that bad...
Stick with Avast as the resident?
Yeah, GA and Firefox looked suspect to me...

    Well, that's good news.

It does not matter which anti-virus you keep but do remove one of them!

StatBar is a resource hog as well: http://www.castlecops.com/s3531-STATBAR_exe.html

    I suggest removing BitTorrent too.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    O2 - BHO: IDMIEHlprObj Class - {0055C089-8582-441B-A0BF-17B458C2A3A8} - C:\Program Files\Internet Download Manager\IDMIECC.dll (file missing)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Post a new log when you are ready.

Cybertech, what about Spybot's Teatimer? I've heard that it doesn't play well with a recent Microsoft update?

Yes, I got side tracked ... I would disable that as well and I forgot to say his java is out of date. There was no reason stated in your report so I'm not sure what you were wanting us to look at.

    Disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
    Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
    Click on System Startup icon.
    Uncheck Teatimer box.
    Click Allow Change box.

You can follow this link if you need help: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Disable this with msconfig: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
