I was given this pc by a friend, and it is super slow. I went to see if there was anything I could remove, and noticed that I have Microsoft office home and student 2007, and microsoft office xp professional with frontpage. Both programs use 239 mb, and 397 mb. Are these both operating systems, and if xp comes on when I start the pc, does that mean that I can remove the student?

Those are applications..I would leave them there..as having office can be rather nice

How much ram does the machine have?
have you unchecked any of your startup entries?
    Did any spyware scans?

what about microsoft .Net framework? I recently downloaded an application that would tell me what was being typed, and sights seen; removed that, but it made me download some microsoft app that was a requirement... what is the best free virus protection? I recently was fired and cannot afford a mcafee, or similar.
