    1. We cannot use the Search option when we go into our files on this computer. It merely shows the dog behind the blue side-bar, and the X to close it. Nothing else. I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO FIX IT! IT MAKES FINDING BAD FILES ON THIS THING HARD!!!

We did NOTHING. My grandpa went on the computer, installed some Virus Protection because ours was expired, and then when we went on this was disabled, as well as the problem below.

    2. My grandpa did what he did, and then we discovered he deleted Windows Media 9. this was a few years ago, and we had not installed 10, because 9 was fine, and we needed not to upgrade.

The only files for 10 are patches over 9.

9 was DISCONTINUED because 10 comes installed in every new computer, and they ASSUME you have 9 to patch it over.

It is so annoying because we had to get Musicmatch jukebox for our music (We have a lot of CDs we put on the computer, because both me and my brother have MP3 players.) and other programs.

We can't see anything online because directshow player was deleted with WMP.

IT HAS BEEN YEARS. PLEASE HELP ME!

Try this for the search problem:
    Start> Run> type:
    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    and hit Enter
You should get a prompt confirmation box saying it has been successful.

You can try this, create a restore point before you try in case you have problems.

    1. Search Assistant

This will re-install the Search Assistant:

Go to Start => Run and type in:
    %systemroot%\inf {No spaces}
    Click OK.
    Locate the file Srchasst.inf
Right-click the file, and click on Install. You will be asked to insert your windows XP installation CD in the drive.

This will reinstall the Search Assistant.

    2. Windows Media Player 9

Go to Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
On the right, click on Add/Remove Windows Components
Scroll down to Windows Media Player and check the box.
Click Next and follow the instructions.

If a remnant of Media Player is installed, uninstall it and the re-install it.

    Luck!

    p.s. added:

Just to follow on Augie's good suggestion, try these two also from the Run box

    regsvr32 wshom.ocx
    regsvr32 urlmon.dll
