I have 2 win 98 comps on a lan behind a Linux firewall on an old 486 (setup by friend).
One went down and I lost everything.
I formatted and reinstalled everything and could not make them connect to each other till I hacked the reg.
But I still can not surf the net from the
box that crashed. I have matched all the network setting to the one that does surf.
the only differences are the IP address's
    and the comp name.

    thanks for your time

Make sure that the NIC works.
Can you can ping the NIC?
Can you ping the other PC?

    Hi Thanks,

i don't see how thew NICcan be the problem when I can do everything but surf the net.
The comps can pass all other data thruthe network.
But nothing will get to the cable access from the 2nd comp.
