I have a Dell Dimension 2400 and have been running a secondary HDD as an add on for well over 2 years now, but now all of a sudden the 2nd drive is running a lot slower than the primary drive. If I am playing music from this drive it will skip randomly and when copying data to and from the drive the mouse movement becomes choppy and everything slows down.

So far I have tried removing the drive and replacing it with another spare I borrowed from a friend and this was doing the same. I have checked my drive in another machine and it works perfectly. I then swapped out the IDE cable and still no difference. Both disks are running off the same IDE cable and have been for some time, I really don't understand why all of a sudden this has started to happen.

Any help on this will be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Graham

Sometimes that is the only symptom of file system errors. Try chkdsk /r on the drive.

Check to see that the drive is running dma and has not reverted to pio mode. You check this in device mgr>ide/atapi controller>properties>advanced.
