It depends on what you want to install.

Do you have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7?

Many software programs will install and work in both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, but some software programs come in both versions and has to be installed in the same version.

Printer software and device drivers come in 32-bit and 64-bit versions, so the correct version needs to be installed, depending on whether you're using Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit.

Any software that communicates directly with the HAL (device drivers or virtual device drivers) must be the same (32- or 64-bit) as the operating system. Other than that, almost all 32-bit software will work with a 64-bit program.

Exception: Any 32-bit software that still has 16-bit code will not work with a 64-bit O/S.

Note that since you didn't mention it, Windows 7 comes in 64-bit and 32-bit versions. If you have the 32-bit version of Windows 7, all 32-bit software will work--period. All the comments above are for if you have the 64-bit version of Windows 7.
