Hi, I'm new here and would like to start of by saying thanks for this helpful forum :)

When it comes to computing I'm far from a expert so I though what better place to learn and get advice, hope all are having a fine day.

If someone could give some help or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. I want to buy a laptop powerful enough to run programs such as Cubase 8 or pro tools and to do other things like video editing. Firstly I need a laptop and I can only stretch to 450 pounds, I have been looking all over and its mind boggling, I want to make sure that I get the right laptop and don't waste my money.

Would a laptop with core i5 be powerful enough to run such programs? The laptops that fit my budget seem to have i5 with around 8gb RAM.

here is a link to a laptop I have fund on ebay. (please forgive me if lining isn't allowed)

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221759386420?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Does that seem like fair value? and is it powerful enough for my needs? :)
Also is there a risk with buying a refurbished laptop from ebay?

    Thanks for any help :)

    Hi and welcome to TSG.

I am not familiar with the particular program so a little difficult to comment on its capability in that respect. However, the i5 is a decent CPU and it has 8Gb RAM and a decent size hard drive. Dell are a decent make and the Inspirons are fairly decent to my knowledge.

Buying a refurb from Ebay is always got to be a bit 'hit and miss', but you are going to struggle to get anything comparable to that new for that budget.

You could always try sites like Aria or Ebuyer (links below), you can pick up some nice deals in their Specials.

    www.aria.co.uk
    www.ebuyer.co.uk

Aria have a Toshiba Satellite L50 at £395 inc VAT at the moment, only 1 left:

    http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials...RAM,+750GB+HDD,+Windows+8.1)+?productId=64591

This is comparable to the Dell only a slightly smaller hard drive (750GB instead of 1TB), and only Intel HD graphics which will limit it if you want to use it for games or graphics intensive tasks. I have had a Toshiba before and it served me well for a long time. Its running Windows 8.1 so you should be able to upgrade that to Windows 10 for free I believe, if you wanted to.

If you could stretch your budget slightly to £475 (ish) then they also have the Asus below:

    http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Lapt...e+i7,+6GB,+1TB,+Windows+8.1)+?productId=64341

6Gb RAM instead of 8Gb but its running an i7 rather than an i5 CPU which might be better for processing music, it also has 1TB hard drive the same as the Dell. However, probably only available today as its in their Deals4Today section.

The main advantage with both the above two are they are new and will have warranties etc.

Cubase 8 or pro tools - min spec is for 4GB ram - which most PCs have now
Video editing - what program are you using

Do you have a PC you are running those on now ?
if so whats the spec of that PC
look at task manager to see if its using a lot of CPU or RAM

    Currys have a new i5 8GB ram £449
    http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput...ire-e5-573-15-6-laptop-iron-10133296-pdt.html
    And John Lewis £350
    http://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-g50-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-ram-1tb-15-6-/p1947932?colour=Black

I know people who have purchased refurb from here
    http://www.misco.co.uk/product/2169...y-Refurb-Laptop?fromProductList=Category+list
    160GB SSD 8GB Ram
It does not have USB 3 - so that maybe a problem on space
    and a small 12" screen

Not sure what the performance of that i5 is - will need to look at benchmarks as they do all vary
but it is the same i5-5200U as you linked to
    so be careful
I use this site to compare CPUs
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

    The screen resolution is
    Resolution 1366 x 768
which is normal on the lower price CPUs
But thats the same as the one you linked to
So the graphic card may not be great

Video editing can be quite demanding on performance
I have an i5 with 6GB ram and created a 35min HD video from about 40 clips with music and it worked OK
But the larger the file the slower it will become to render and edit
I was only using Windows Movie Maker

I'm also not that keen on currys as a store - prefer staples or john lewis

Thank you very much for the helpful reply's :) I must say I'm impressed so thank you.

Before I managed to read the reply's I went with the dell laptop that I posted in my original post. I'm glad to read that the i5 is decent and that dell is decent too. At the moment the laptop I'm using is very old and slow and can barely run more than 3 webpages at once without crashing so running any video editing software or DAW (Cubase) would be impossible.

Hopefully the laptop I have bought will be enough to run those programs :) Thanks again for your wonderful help.
