    don't know exactly how it works but have you looked at these options too?

    Use Matrix mode and source selector switch to create breathtaking 5.1 surround sound from stereo, 4 channel, or 5.1 sound sources
    # Input selector switch:

    * 2 Channel (stereo)
    * 4 Channel
    * 5.1 Channel
    * SoundTouch™ remote control
    * Master volume
    * Sub, center & surround levels
    * Matrix surround sound

    don't think you'll get true 5.1 with the onboard sound card..
    see I have a soundblaster 5.1 card and it has 3 speaker outs.... 2 for front then rear. for quad speakers... and a "digital" out for 5.1 sound decoders...

    from logitech site...
    Question
    What does the source Selector Switch do?
    Answer
    The source selector switch on Logitech speakers allows you to experience simulated surround sound if your sound card does not support surround sound. Depending on the model of your Logitech speaker system, you may convert 2 channel, 4 channel, or 6 channel audio sources into simulated surround sound. For example, if you own a Z-5300 5.1 surround sound system, but you only have a 2 channel sound card, you can select the 2 channel option on the source selector to emulate 5.1 surround sound.

    I have the 5300 speakers. Did you get the volume control with the speakers? On the bottom right is a button for the matrix sound. Press it and it should assimilate 5.1 sound.
