I'm not sure how to categorize my problem but I'll attempt to describe exactly what is happening. I'm not even sure what information will help diagnose it (I suspect something is corrupt or a hardware error, but who knows.)

about 3 out of every 4 times I open Gmail it freezes Firefox when it starts loading its javascript. The freeze eats exactly 50% of my dual core CPU (varying percentages individually, but always 50% total) and is non responsive. When I Ctrl+Alt+delete to close it, the freeze has a 50/50 chance to jump to my IM client, or Explorer, or any other program that is open. The same problem 50% CPU and the new program is unresponsive. Often I have to wait a few minutes before starting again, otherwise I get the 50% CPU and no response.

The freeze is identical with other programs, but I have yet to identify a source beyond Gmail. It happens less often with Safari when I have lots of tabs. It happens once in 10 for Skype, and it has happened once with thunderbird.

Any ideas? I've got Hijackthis and I can get almost any information you need to diagnose it, I just don't know what would be most useful...

I forgot to mention that I've reinstalled Windows to no avail.

I've also reinstalled Firefox, and removed all of the extensions for a bit, none of which helped.

Now even HiJackThis has frozen with 50% CPU activity!

It seems to happen more often when I am doing several things at once on my computer. (several tabs, or several programs processing)
