80g hd reads 2g

    ok here gos i have gateway laptop that had a 80g hd in it i could not get it to boot so i reformated still nothing so i went and bought a new 80g hd put it in and formated but it only reads 2g hd?

    Sounds like it's formatted as FAT16.

    What did you use for the format?

    Meaning you used the XP CD for the format? You should have had the option to allocate the size of the partition.

    Is XP now installed on a 2GB partition? Presumably Disk Management shows the rest of the drive as unallocated.

    It's my guess that you did something wrong during the formatting process.

    Did you create a new C partition using the entire size of the hard drive, then format the new C partition with the NTFS file system?

    yes xp cd and no its showing that its just a 2g hd so wile i sit here i decided to reformat lol and its telling me that there is no hd hmm

    i put the old hd back in and it will not do any thing weres my hammer

    ok i pit the new one back in shows that file system is ntfs free space is 181mb total size 1.99gb

    I don't know what could be happening if it recognised the drive before.

    It sounds like you could use some hands on help there.
