98 reinstall

    well i'm trying to format this harddrive on my friends computer, how would i go about doing so if windows crashes when i try to open anything? i can go to display properties and thats about it...is there a way to format it in bios? or in msdos mode? or should i even try safe mode? thanks for your help

    Formatting has nothing to do with windows itself. You can format a drive that is totally unbootable. A brand new drive has nothing on it at all, yet is still formatable.

    You format from your floppy drive with a bootdisk, Windows not required. Windows is installed after the format is done.

    how do i "format from your floppy drive with a bootdisk," is this a disk i buy or i make? i only have the windows 98 se cd

    You can make it within Windows 98 (My Computer > right click A: with floppy disk in > Format. There is an option to format and to make disc bootable.)

    Or if you don't have access to Windows 98, go to www.bootdisk.com for the files.

    ok is there a guide on how to use the boot disk? i'm getting stuck

    Create a bootdisk using the instructions on bootdisk.com and then insert it into your computer's floppy drive as it boots. It will then boot off of the floppy drive to a dos prompt where you will be able to run fdisk, for making/deleting partitions, and format for formatting them.
