My home page will not stay after I reboot I get a string of numbers, My comet tool bar will not appear, and Norton will not run a complete scan. I tryed to use hijackthis so I could post for help. When I saved the log, my norton indicates the it contains a bloodhound virus and cannot remove it. I am new to this, please help.

Hi thebeavis

Welcome to TSG! :)

Please do this. Click here to download Hijack This. Click on the Hijackthis.exe.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

*Note: When you download Hijack This Do Not download it to a temp folder or to the desktop. Create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This and put it in that folder.

Download HijackThis from here. Make a new folder for the program and then open it, click Scan. When it finishes scanning, do no remove anything but instead save the log and post it here.

Click here to download CWShredder. UnZip the file, close all browser windows and click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

When it is finished Restart your computer.

IMPORTANT!: To help prevent this from happening again, I strongly recommend you install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits.

The simplest way to make sure you have all the security patches is to go to Windows update and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs"

Go here and download Adaware 6 Build 181

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest referencefiles.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window :Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Restart your computer.

Then go here and download Spybot Search & Destroy.

Install the program and launch it.

Before scanning press Online and Search for Updates .

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click Check for Problems and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds marked in RED.

Restart your computer.

Come back here and post another Hijack This log and we'll get rid of what's left.

  1. Download Ad-Aware 6.181 from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
  2. Install the program, open it check to make sure you have the latest reference file by clicking on webupdate. Make sure that your reference file reads 01R278 30.03.2004 (or higher number/date). If it does not, then click here and install the file manually.
  3. Make sure the following settings are turned to ON
-From the main window click on Start then Activate in-depth scan.
-Click on Use custom scanning options>Customize and make sure the following options are turned on:
    Scan within archives
    Scan active processes
    Scan registry
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL
    Scan my host-files
  4. Click on Settings and make sure the following are enabled:
    Unload recognized processes during scanning
  5. Click on Cleaning engine and make sure that Let windows remove files in use at next reboot is on.
  6. Finally Click Proceed to save your settings.
  7. Click on Scan Now from the main window and select Use Custom Scanning options and click scan.
  8. When scan completes, remove all items, then run another scan but this time select the Perform Smart-System Scan option and then also remove all items it finds.
then
    1. Download Spyboy S&D from this page
    2. Open and install the program then click here and follow the instructions for updating the program. Download all available updates.
    3. Run a scan by clicking on Spybot S&D and then clicking Search & Destroy and then Check for problems
    4. When scan completes, remove all items in red by making sure that they are checked and then click Fix selected problems
Then post another log.

No CWShsredder won't take those out, but Adaware and Spybot will. It is not wise to keep Gator or Comet. There are safe alternatives to both of them.

Sigh, there is a lot of stuff you still need to remove, but it'll be hard to tell which is comet/gator related...

You didn't post an new scanlog that shows what is left after running CWShredder, you posted the same log that you posted the first time.

Here is the time stamp from the first log:

Scan saved at 11:23:27 PM, on 3/30/2004

This is the second:

Scan saved at 11:23:27 PM, on 3/30/2004

You need to scan again with Hijack This and save the new log that shows what is there now so we know what needs to be removed.
