a friend of mine trying to install a cd-rom on his Windows 3.1 must have done something to cause his system to now think he has a 5'" floppy instead of his 3". How can he get the computer back to saying he had a 3" A drive? On startup he gets a message there is an error in line 1 and line 2 in his config. sys file. On trying to open the config.sys, there is a flash, but it doesn't open. Any suggestions?

To edit the config.sys you need to go into DOS or boot to the command prompt and enter edit config.sys at the C:\> prompt. The drive will not show up in Win3.1 unless you install the real mode drivers so the drive can be accessed from that OS. If there is already a CD-ROM installed it's drivers are conflicting with the new one.

How do you tell your computer, in Windows 3.1 that you have a 3" floppy drive, not a 5"? Does this involve editing the config.sys file?

I would check first in the computers bios to be sure that the floppy drive is set correctly there. It should be 3.5" 1.4meg.
