My husband and I needed a bit of a getaway, so we spent four days at a nearby state park, Douthat State Park, in Virginia. Here are some photos of the trip. These are of the lake.

On the opposite end of the lake from the dam, there is a beach area. This area was created when they scooped out the clay and dirt they needed for the dam. Someone then had the bright idea of creating the beach in the "hole" it left in the terrain.

The spillway that is at the end of the dam. There is a large spillway that is part of the dam, then a marshy wetland area to catch the water during high water periods, then a smaller spillway to allow the water to go off into the lower creek.

The cabin we stayed in. Built in 1936 - 1942, the Douthat State Park still has the original cabins and lodges built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Everything is still in good working order, though the cabins and lodges have been modernized with electricity. No TVs, internet, or such at the cabins....only a WiFi signal at the camp store and the office area and the Beach House area. Very quiet and relaxing. Douthat is one of the original six state parks ever created. Roosevelt created the CCC to create the State Parks as part of the economic recovery from the Great Depression. Six State Parks were built, with Douthat being one of the first started. What an incredible vision and incredibly great way to get unemployed young men back to work and the get economy started again.

It's so beautiful and peaceful. I'd love to stay in a cabin like that.

I read about this on your Facebook page and it sounds like you had a great time. :)
