a way to lock the computer

i need a way to lock the computer so that no one can use the computer (kids) and i dont really want to have to shut the computer off. i cant set a new account and set as default because its not my computer. any suggestions

what operating system, what brand of machine? If xp, simply assign a passworded user account and make it the default account.
