Hi guys ( and girls )

I have an Acer Asspire 5332 running Vista.

A month or so ago the CD/DVD rom stopped working. Device Manager states it is unable to start and updating driver/uninstalling device etc does nothing either, other than recognise the drive as "standard cd rom" whereas it is actually a dvd rewriter. Acer tech support say that windows should pick up the driver automatically and cannot understand what the problem is. They do not provde a driver for the cd/dvd unit.

Then, in the last 2 weeks, certain web pages have failed to open, namely Hotmail and Facebook. All I get is a blank page with no error message Also videos on all sites intermittently work and don't work, saying I need to install Javascript which I already have! I have done all the usual checks and fixes ( internet options / javascript uninstall reinstall etc, as well as un-installing internet explorer itself.

Using another browser ( Safari ) opens up all pages including Hotmail and Facebook fine, but I still get the issue with the videos.

Does this sound like a virus? I have run Avast scan, and Malwarebytes and CC Cleaner. I am posting a "Hijack this log" for any braniancs to look over. Not sure if it is one problem, or several but doing my head in !!!

    thanks in advance,

    Rob

OK - UPDATE !!!! After trawling web for ages and finding loads of other people with similar issues on different leptops I stumbled across kioskea.net, a bit like Yahoo answers me thinks! Anyway, here was the reply to a similar issue and solution with regards to the CD/DVD rewriter issue.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

    1.Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

This can be done by opening the start menu and left clicking RUN, another option is pressing the windows logo key on the keyboard

together with the R key, in the box you type regedit and click OK ( or enter on your keyboard )
    2. Find the right key in the registry.

Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > Class > {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

When you see the UpperFilters key left click it and press delete, you will be asked for a confirmation, just click YES

Now do the exact same but with the Lowerfilters.
    3. Reboot the computer

Now restart your computer and you should have a working CD/DVD drive once more !

    CONCLUSION:

Some CD/DVD writing software change the filters in the registry to there own, this can sometimes cause problems.

By deleting these value's windows puts them back on default after a reboot.............

Any help with the remaining issues gratefully received :)

    Joeten,

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately my cache looks ok. I am sure it is something to do with internet explorer as the pages all open/display correctly using another browser on this same laptop. I am attaching 3 screenshots of what i see on IE for various sites. These were done this morning so if anyone can see on their site what sort of content I am not displaying maybe this would help identify the issue?? Thanks for your ongoing help! :)
