I have win98SE and have the "about:blank" homepage hijacker. I have spybot and noadware but I got this pesky little devil anyhow. I cannot get rid of it with either program. It takes over my home page (MSN) and resets it to "about: blank". It is very annoying to have to reset the home page each time I login. Anyone know of a FREE method of eliminating it? I paid 30 bucks for NoAdware and it doesn't do it. Appreciate any help.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Download and run Ad-Aware SE: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Install the program and launch it.
First, in the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.
Then, in the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.
Then, deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
To start the scan, click the Next button.
When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next).

Then run ActiveScan online virus scan:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it.
Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
Save the results from the scan.

Post a new Hijack This log and the results of the ActiveScan.

Go here, scroll down the page to the

Windows 98/98 SE + DOS 7

heading, click the

98 SE

link(which will take you to another webpage), scroll down to the

Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE/ME Q891711.DLL build 4.10.2223 + KB891711.EXE build 4.10.2224 Fix

link, then click it. This will allow you to download the U891711.exe file. Once you've downloaded it and saved it, double-click it to start the install process. Once the install is complete, your computer will automatically reboot.

This update replaces the KB891711 update that Microsoft released several months ago which caused problems with several computer users.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are several programs running in the background that don't need to be, but we can deal with that later after I get the "all clear" from CheeseBall.

I'm not sure whether these are false alarms by panda so would like to check the files please & if they are get them fixed

please do this for us

download suspicious file packer from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tools/index.html and unzip it to desktop, open it &
paste in this list of files and when it has created the archive on your desktop please upload that to http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=1.0 so we can examine the files

Thanks Derek (y)

Rick, you should also uninstall NoAdware4 from Add/Remove Programs.

No Aware is NOT the most reliable or efficient antispyware program around so unless you have purchased it I concure with cheeseball, it should be removed

It just has too many false positives for my liking and isn't very good at fixing anything it finds

Thank you Derek.

Rick, please do the following...

Rescan with Hijack This.
Close all browser windows except Hijack This.
Put a check mark beside these entries and click "Fix Checked".

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NoAdware4] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\NOADWARE4.EXE" :Min:

Boot into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key at Startup, before the Windows logo screen)

Find and delete this folder: C:\PROGRAM FILES\NOADWARE4

Also in Safe Mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box.
The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

It's normal if some files don't delete!

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot, post a new log.

I did delete noadware but decided, after spybot and adaware SE both failed to find a problem, I should try re-installing it (Cost me $29) and see if it still found nothing. It found two severe problems. (1) was a file IEPlug called Windows\extract.exe and the other was (2) Starware. I deleted them and the problem of home page changing to blank was solved. I thank you all for the efforts to help me. I am a 70 y/o dinosaur when it comes to computers.:)
