Get the Win98 driver for the sound card. First download it, remove the old drivers from device manager, reboot and install the new ones for Win98.

You deleted and reinstalled the drivers that fast? Are there any resource conflicts with the sound card and any other devices?

Is this a home built system or a factory build like a DELL or Compaq?

Ac 97 is onboard sound so what you'll need to do is post the make and model of your motherboard so we can provide the drivers. Aida 32 is a good tool to give both the make and model as well as chipset on the board. Make note of that info and post it here.
