My parents have a linksys USB wifi network adapter, and for some reason it just stopped working last night out of nowhere...It's running on an XP Pro system.

But I've gone into Device Manager to try and "reinstall" the driver, and using the (Automatic) setting, I'm ending up with an access denied error.

I am logged into an Administrator account too...I even went as far as booting into minimal network/Safe mode, to try and install it but still no go; same error; stating Im not an Administrator.

And for some reason it appears my "Administrator" account (only appears on the login list in Safe Mode) has been password protected....

So either, I need to figure out what is locking MY Administrator account from installing these drivers, or find a way to reset the "Administrator" account password.

It's an Acer desktop, going on 2 years old in August (though who knows how long it was on their shelf :p)

I've even went as far as trying to plug it into other USB ports, thinking some were bad, but my USB pen drive works fine in them so they aren't faulty ports.

run regedit and right click on each subfolder HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT HKEY_CURRENT_USER HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE HKEY_USERS HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG select permissions and make sure the account your logged in with is in the administrators group if its not there add it and give it full control and read
