I finally decided to get better service for 1/2 the price and don't need AOL 6.0 anymore. I went to add/delete programs and the only AOL program listed was aolunins_us.exe . I realized what I did immediately AFTER I clicked add/delete. No other AOL program is listed in my add/delete list, yet the program is still on my machine.

Wondering if there's anywhere I can download the uninstall program (I couldn't find it on the net) or need help deleting the files and restoring the registry and other settings manually. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Problems: I only have cancilled my AOL service and would have to reinstate my billing to get any updates (of which there are about 3 since my 4.0 disc)

I tried installing 'PC inspectors' file recovery and will keep for future use but seems to be no help w/ this problem as when I search for *aol*.exe files the uninstall doesn't come up anywhere.

any suggestions from here? thanks again in advance.

AOL installs files all over the place, so it's not a simple matter of deleting the folder as it would be with many simpler installations. Look in the AOL folder and see if there is an install.log. That should enumerate all the things that the installer did when AOL was installed. It would be a pain, but you could undo everything that the installer did, following that log backwards.

I found the log, I feel hijacked by AOL. Can I (should I??) really start hacking away at my windows folder and reg keys that were overwritten?? I'm really kinda pissed that AOL doesn't appear in my add/delete list. Any thoughts on that?

Here's a copy of the install log, this to me is ridiculous.

[the log was too long to post here, I deleted anything in the log that was in my 'C:AOL' and 'program files/AOL 6.0' folders so it could fit here]

Can I ignore the overwritten files and 'INI' parts? Do I need to do anything w/ the 'REGDB' stuff? I'm thinking of deleting the obvious files, doing a hijackthis report and deleting the AOL reg keys, and if I'm screwed after that be prepared to reformat?

Yes. It is infuriating. And the worst thing is that often when uninstalling AOL, other things stop working, too, so that many people just reinstall it in order to get their machines working again.

Generally, when you install or uninstall AOL, it searches for older versions of the software.

You could just go ahead and try to undo everything that is in that log. The many registry database entries should be removed, too, but they are less of a problem than they look because they are mostly subkeys of a major key that, when deleted, will remove all the subkeys.

But, in light of my earlier statement, the easiest thing for you to do would probably be to get yourself a free copy of AOL9 from a supermarket or magazine and install it. Then, during the uninstallation, you will probably be able to remove all the remnants of any past versions, too. That would save you a lot of tedious searching through the registry.

After that, you could do a registry search and remove anything that remained. But if I were you, I'd give myself the head-start of a normal uninstallation.

If you have broadband, and can't find an AOL9 CD, you could download it from their FTP site. That's a pain, too, but at least you don't have to sit there waiting for it to finish.

You can get copies of all their earlier version there, too:

    ftp://ftp.aol.com/

What version did you have installed most recently?

6.0 was the highest version. I like the install/uninstall plan. I'll try that. I'm still on dialup but I'm sure it won't be very difficult to find a AOL cd in the gutter somewhere. Hell they send everyone a cd almost every month anyways. thanks for your time I'll let you know how it goes.

Well I finally got a 9.0 CD (and the courage) to reinstall/uninstall IMMEDIATLY! I had to restart in safemode after the uninstall but now things seem ok. I still had to manually uninstall AOL pictures/ICQ/and 3 other aolBS programs, reset quicktime to NOT run at startup and change my folder options back to my own (maybe from safe mode). Spybot and adaware next and NEVER another AOL cd in my house. Thanks and F AOL!!

LOL. They make it easy to join, but they don't ever want you to leave, and least not peacefully.

Congratulations and thanks for the followup.[IMG]
