checked all wires following directions of ip of my workplace but my home acer cpu will not start up. a floating rectangle said 'cable not connected' and then after shutting down and restarting would see square box in upper left corner of screen alternating between analog and digital, then the 'cable not connected' would come back. thanks for your help.

it is an acer aspire model x3400g and is about two years old.

"analog and digital, then the 'cable not connected'" indicates the monitor is not getting a signal from the PC. It doesn't really help determine what is wrong the computer. Since you are getting no signal at all, the computer likely isn't completing POST. Thus there is a hardware fault. The first step would be to open up the computer, and remove/reinstall all cables/hardware (ie: RAM, cards, power cables, data cables, etc.). That will ensure nothing has come loose.
