    Is it at all possible to connect a client computer to an Active Directory via the Internet?

    If so, would you change the client's DNS server to the remote IP, and then connect?

    You can do it over a VPN connection. I would not try it over an unsecure connection.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Is there any software availible that allows you to run a VPN connection as a service (thus Active Directory can be logged into, after computer startup)?

    Do you have a firewall with VPN capability? There are many VPN clients that can be started at startup time.

    I cannot seem to find any freeware VPN clients that can run as a service. Any examples?

    Seems to be working fine with Hamachi, but there are 2 problems as of current;
    1. I must manually edit the DNS records to fix the client machine IP addresses (from 192.168.0.* to their Hamachi address)
    2. Logging in takes ffffffooooorrrreeevvvveeeerrrr (like 2-3 minutes) - is there a problem, or would VPN usually take this long?

    Ok, I've done some testing with a physical link (instead of via VPN);

    I set the client's preferred DNS server to the IP address of the domain controller, and Server-1.DAWSON.FAM resolves fine, but not Server-1 (I guess because it's not on the LAN).

    For this reason (so I believe), the client cannot join the domain controller and returns the error 'The network path cannot be found'. Is this because it's trying to resolve Server-1, and not Server-1.DAWSON.FAM? If so, is there any way to resolve this by either adding a manual DNS record, or by changing the address it connects to?
