I've been using Ad-Aware for the last few years to remove spyware but for the last few days I've been getting the message whenever I run the programme that Ad-Aware is unable to clean the files.

Someone mentioned that the free version of Ad-Aware ceased working on the last day of 2007, can anyone advise or point me to an alternative programme.

If you got the Ad-Aware SE free then yes there are no more updates from Ad-Aware SE updater.
But you can get SE update for the def files still on your own and do a Manual install by going to there site here.
    http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/
Then your see updated Def files for 2007 and SE in the top right.

Unzip the file which you have downloaded (defs.zip) to extract defs.ref and copy defs.ref to the directory where you have Ad-Aware SE installed, overwriting the existing defs.ref.

I had no problem updating Adaware 2007 (not SE) this morning, which is also a free version.

It looks as though Ad-Aware 2007 goes through the update process but I still get the pop up telling me:

    Ad-Aware 2007 An Error Occurred.

    CLEANING

    Unable to remove file

    Suggested Action
    0

Will be removed after you restart your computer

The files appear to be removed after restarting the PC.

Not sure whether it would delete old files. I would just uninstall Adaware SE and install Adaware 2007.

Winzip should work because it is a ZIP archive.
