Hi everyone, please can someone help, we have had viruses/trojans, computer running REALLY slow for the past few weeks.

We had a previous version of Ad-aware installed which ran without problems. I downloaded Ad-aware SE recently, it detected 83 items, when I tried to delete them it froze the computer and I had to do a hard shut down. Tried again several times, same thing. I read here that there had been glitches with this version at first so deleted and downloaded it again. Again it detected 83 items and again the comp froze when I tried to delete however this time I was able to quit out of ad-aware. Then I got the following pop-up messages (not in this order):
    - Troj StilenA - Not Cleanable C:Windows\Temp\update.1exe
    - Troj StilenA - Cannot access C:Windows\Temp\rnxiJiLib.exe
    - explorer has caused an error in KERNEL32.dll
    - runtime error 216 at 0040380E
    - adaware has caused an error in <unknown> adaware will now close
    - iexplore.exe this program is incompatible with this version of windows

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Kate

    please follow these instructions :
scan your hard drive with this tool :

this is where to get it
    http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=download

and this link how to use it

    http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=easytouse

    After downloading TDS, don't forget
to update to the latest database!

    this where to update manually
    http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=update

it removes more than adwares and cookies ! it removes trojans and worms etc etc
    IMPORTANT :
after update ,when you launch the program ,it will scan your memory running programs ,and after 20 to 30 seconds(u ll see this message :trace scan finished) ,you are ready to click on SYSTEM TESTING ,a tab opens then CLICK SCAN FULL SYSTEM .good luck ,keep me posted.
One more thing ,do you have an antivirus ?if you do ,which one do you have ?

I think beforer we go to far let's have a HJT log and see what we are dealing with

go to http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HijackThis.exe and download 'Hijack This!'.
make sure it is placed into it's own folder, not a temporary folder. Then doubleclick the Hijackthis.exe.
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

I am sorry to be impatient but please can somebody take a look at my hijack this log and tell me how to proceed. I thought I should run HJT before going ahead and doing as the first reply suggested, was I wrong and should I have done that first?
Again, thanks for any help it is greatly appreciated.

your machine is infected with VIRUS>>>
    C:\WINDOWS\RunDLL.exe
rundll.exe is added to the system as a result of the LOXOSCAM virus.
    Security Risk (0-5): 4
If you can read english ,clean your machine with tds3 see previous post ,and make sure that you have a good antivirus ,efficient in real time protection ,stay away from free antivirus ,most of the time they are good only 75%,that s why they are free .
and there is also a lot to be cleaned in your log (anything that says no name and file missing need to be cleaned )

C:\WINDOWS\RunDLL.exe is a needed and vital part of windows98/ME

in some cases it will be replaced by a virus like the loxoscam virus but I don't think so in this case as there are no start up entries so that means that this C:\WINDOWS\RunDLL.exe is almost certain to be the genuine one

to be sure upload C:\WINDOWS\RunDLL.exe to http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html who will determine whether it is good or bad

I will tell you what to fix in the next post

one more advice , like i said if you have free antivirus free versio0n ,take this opportunity ,go to kaspersky antivirus website ,download free evaluation FULL VERSION ,at least you can have it for 30 days protected ,update it and scan your HD ,see what else can be cleaned .
kaspersky just signed with novell ,i always believe they are in top 3 in the world .good luck ,hope these posts will help you get back a clean machine .

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

then select EVERYTHING in C:\windows\temp except temporary internet files, cookies and history folders and delete all that as well and everything in C:\temp

    1) Open Control Panel
    2) Click on Internet Options
    3) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
    4) You may also want to check the box "Delete all offline content"
    5) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the temporary internet files
    6) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that websites have placed on your hard drive

    then
    Reboot normally &

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware SE from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

and while you are at the adaware site download and install http://www.lavasoft.de/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml

and run it before the main adaware scan and follow it's directions

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least SE1R8 13.09.2004 or a higher number/later date
    Then ........
click the "Scan" button. and select full scan

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries. You can safely ignore any MRU entries though and not delete them

    reboot again

Run an online antivirus check from at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites
    http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
    http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
    http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

if you want to run TDS then please do so

this is the instructions for using it

the antitrojan that I use is

    TDS3 from http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/

download & install the 30 day free trial, update it manually as described here http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=update as the trial version doesn't have auto update enabled

then press scan control & tick all the little boxes in the bottom part of that window, press save configuration and then close that window by pressing the red X in top right corner, then select system testing and select full system scan

sit back with a cup of coffee and watch what it finds

    NOTE:

Unlike set and forget av's TDS works with you, it doesn't auto delete anything but puts a list of found suspect files in the bottom window

right click any file it finds and it gives you options on dealing with it, the normal selection would be delete , but first select "save as text", that will create a logfile of all the found suspect files and put it in the TDS directory called scandump.txt.

post back with the tds log after running please, just copy & paste the entries from the scandump.txt

I checked Kaspersky, it came up with this result : "Kaspersky Anti-Virus has not detected any viruses at this time in the file you submitted".

I will continue as per your instructions and post the log again.

    Thanks!!

Could be dumb question but I don't want to do anything wrong and muck this up - I am at the stage where having done the stuff in safe mode you say to reboot normally. Having done it twice as per symantec instructions I am still getting the message when the comp starts up saying windows is running in start up mode for diagnostic purposes or something like it. Was I supposed to go back and uncheck hidden folders etc before I rebooted???
Also, since I have had sooo many probs with ad-aware should I uninstall and download it again??
Thank you thank you thank you for your help.

leave the hidden folders, and go to msconfig & press advanced untick start up mkenu and then on the msconfig main tab select normal start

It would be a safe bet to uninstall adaware and download a new copy incase it has been damaged
