It appears that the only way I can execute Ad-aware SE personal (freeware) is in Safe mode and I can only get the zip file updates to the definitions since everytime I go to execute Ad-aware SE it immediately crashes my computer - so I am not able to update it over my Internet connection.

I have removed the program with add/remove and reinstalled it again - same behavior.

Anyone experienced this and have a solution?

    Tia,

    P.S. I have a Win98SE machine with 512MB RAM, 40GB hard disk.

    To lotuseclat79:
It sounds like your system resources are low, low, low. So try this out to check of your system. Try the Following Steps:
    1. Right on the MY Computer Icon and Select - Properties - Then Click
the Performance Tab and look at System Resources - Should be at
a minimum of 80% or higher. If lower then close and goto step 2.
    2. Click on the Start Button Select Run and type in - msconfig -
then select the Startup Tab. Now uncheck everything except the
one called system trey, for the time being. Click the apply button
then the ok button to restart.
    3. After the reboot put a check in the box that says donot show screen
on startup. Then do step 1 over again to check system resources, it
should be in the high 90%.
    4. No run the ad-ware se program and watchit work.
    5. If you have any scanner drivers or printer drivers you are worried
about on boot up then just do step 2 again and check those boxes
and apply and reboot. Then do step to see your system resorces
and you will see them drop again.
Anyway I hope this helps, if not try redown loading adware or check
and see how much free hard disk space you have available. That is
all i can suggest for now. Hope it helps, Flixx.

I had thought of that Flixx. I now normally startup with only the Task Scheduler showing on the System Tray with 97% system resources available.

The strategy that seems to work is that if I first run SpySweeper (Webroot) first, then bring up PC-Cillin Internet Security 2005 - no crash. When the order is reversed, the system crashes.

I was having problems with Ad-Aware crashing my Windows 98 machine.
I shut down Trend Micro to run it and found it then would run with no problems.
Then I checked the settings I had in Trend Micro enabled.
Under System, scan settings I changed every setting to recommended action.
Then I had no more problems and could run Ad-aware with Trend micro running.
    Hope this helps.
