AdClicker-0: Can't delete because Write-Protected Disk

2K views 14 replies 4 participants last post by  rbochner

My PC has been slow. Yesterday I cleaned it with McAfee and found several files with the trojan namd AdClicker-0. I tried to clean, quarantine or delete them, but it doesn't work because it says the disk is write-protected. The directory is C:\_Restore\Temp and the file name starts with A0010### (the ### is now up to at least 678). NOTE: When I actually go to that subdirectory, I only see C:\_Restore and it has only 4 files and no sub-directories. The 4 files are DISKCFG.DAT, SRDISKID.DAT, VxDMon.clg and VxDmon.dat.

I rebooted last night and went under SAFE mode and rechecked with McAfee and now there are several more files in that directory I can't delete. These are NOT listed as AdClicker-0, but include:
- HideWindow
- ProKill-Term: Has same file name format
- TSADBOT (2 files): Has same file name format
- DSSAgent: Has same file name format
- Adware HuntBar: File name is BTIEIN.0
There are also 11 AdClicker-0 files.

Can you please suggest how to get rid of these? I understand that more files may come from rebooting my PC so I have not done that yet. Thanks!!

Welcome to TSG :)

Do this:
go to http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.....
Unzip it to its own folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

If you have anything disabled by MSConfig or any other startup manager, please re-enable it before scanning to post.

;)

I did not disable anything in MSConfig or any other startup manager. Would the virus/trojan have done this?

No......thats fine.

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://helpdesk.its.bethel.edu/resnet/Documents/Antivirus/Safemode.html
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run hijackthis again and put a checkmark against these entries....double check
in case you miss anything....
.....then,close all browser and outlook windows including this one and "fix checked"

Locate and delete:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBSEARCH [FOLDER]
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS [FOLDER]
C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET KEYWORD [FOLDER]

I was successful in everything EXCEPT I could not find the folder:

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS [FOLDER]

I double checked and I have the Windows Explorers Folder Options set as you requested. Is there any other way to locate this folder or is it possible that it does not exist. I could not find the path C:\PROGRA~1 at all. I believe it does exist because it is listed above as the path for some of the files I just deleted.

What will happen if I reboot? For right now I have disabled the internet connection (I'm using a different computer). Thanks again for all your help!!!!

ADDED INFORMATION:
- I re-ran HiJack and confirmed that the path C:\PROGRA~1 does exist. It is being used for some McAfee files. However, I still cannot find the path through Windows Explorer.

#12 ·
Sorry to bother you but I still have some viruses/trojans. I did not reboot after cleaning the PC. Does that make a difference?

All of these are in the C:\_RESTORE\TEMP subdirectory in files called A0010XXX.CPY where XXX is a different set of numbers for each file (except where noted).

Here's what shows up:
- AdClicker-0 (11 files)
- HideWindow (1 file)
- DSSAgent (1 file)
- ProcKill-Term (1 file)
- TSADBOT (2 files)
- Adware-TopMoxie (1 file)
- Adware-HuntBar (1 file) - file is BTIEIN.0

None of these could be cleaned - Says disk is write-protected. Since I know you'll ask for it, here is the HiJack file:

I am also afflicted with AdClicker. AVG-Antivirus and AD-Aware have not detected it, and McAfee FreeScan only tells me which files are infected. Can I gather from your posts that the correct action is to use Hijack This! to FIX all scan results that contain websearch.drsnsrch.com or IncrediFindBHOClass, and then to run CWShredder?
